Adaptation of extremophiles�Methanogens
Methanogens are anaerobic, so they don’t require oxygen. They don’t require organic nutrients, either, and are non-photosynthetic, indicating they could exist in sub-surface environments and therefore are ideal candidates for life on Mars. They use hydrogen as their energy source and carbon dioxide as their carbon source, to metabolize and produce methane, also known as natural gas.
Rebecca Mickol, a doctoral student in space and planetary sciences, found that in the laboratory, four species of methanogens survived low-pressure conditions that simulated a subsurface liquid aquifer on Mars.

Our Superhero
So keeping in mind the adaptations of these organisms, we present to you our ideal space superhero organism, which we are calling “Astrophilis”.
Our superhero is heavily inspired by methanogens since they can already survive the Martian environment, so they give us a good starting point but Astrophilis have some changes which will allow them to progress faster. Astrophilis will have small legs with claws like the ones tardigrades have, and they will also have the ability of reproducing through parthenogenesis. This will allow its species to multiply farther because survival is not just about converting resources into energy, its about spreading your species on the planet you are own. And like tardigrades, they will also have the ability to absorb energy through their skin and like pika’s they will be resilient to hypoxia and will be able to survive on oxygen as well as hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
