HOMEWORK ~ What is it?

In our classroom there are two kinds of homework:

  1. Practice: This is work you do at home to practice what you learned in class.

  • Projects: This work you will do with your family, it will be really fun project where you can get creative!

HOMEWORK ~ What is it?

HW in our class is a choice and should always be a review. It is not graded.

If you have evening plans that come up and you cannot complete the HW- that is ok! Your student should not double up on assignments. Get back into it the next night.

If the HW is becoming too challenging or difficult for your student communicate to your teachers via email. I will make adjustments.

HW PRACTICE

  1. Oral Reading Fluency - this will be a short story glued into the HW journal. Your child will read the same short story to you three times M-Th. You need a stopwatch. I use the one on my clock app on my iPhone. You will time your child for one minute each time they read. Write down the word count they get to within 1 minute at the bottom of the page. Repeat nightly with same story. New story will come every Monday. (More details and tips on the next slide.)

  • The Choice Board: This will get glued into their HW journal every Monday. Pick two squares to do a night. You can do more squares if you want.

  • Turn in HW journals every FRIDAY to class.

Reading Fluency practice for HW

  • Reading Passages: The same story will be read 3 times per evening, Monday-Thursday for homework. Your child’s Homework journal will have a new passage glued into it every week.

a. Your child will read the 1st time to build accuracy. It should be timed for 1 minute. Count the number of words read correctly and record the words per minute (wpm) in the bottom section.

b. Your child will read the story a 2nd time to practice using punctuation when reading and to develop expression.

c. Your child will read the story a 3rd time to develop comprehension.

PRACTICE

This is called the “E.C.R.I practice page” for reading and spelling skills. There will be tasks on the HW choice board that will require your child to use this.

Does your child struggle with reading fluently? Are they still guessing at words? Then start here! Please go over the front and back of this practice sheet weekly 2-3 times a week. Just point and have your child read the words or sounds in each box. Use the Sound Spelling Card when you’re not sure what a letter combination makes.

If you ever need help with helping your child

and using this practice sheet just reach out to Mrs. Smith and we can go over it together. I’m here for ya!

PROJECTS

  • Occasionally there will be Family Projects that will be assigned as homework. We will make sure to send home examples, due dates, and directions for these projects. You and your family will collaborate to create something to share with the class. Do your best to let your student be the one doing the work and youʻre there to assist and provide support- not to do it for them. These projects will be shared with the class so practicing for the presentation of their project is important too!
