GENDER LENS

Girls have different challenges from boys when entering the job market. The most common challenges for young women are: lower levels of education and skills, Childbearing and domestic/care responsibilities, lower self confidence, limited access to key assets (money, land…), gendered labour market segregation, limited mobility

Common barriers for young men are: Higher pressure to be breadwinner, perceptions of young men as idle or criminal, negative peer influences, armed recruitment and demobilization, insecurity and violence

During the sessions, it is important to adopt a gender lens. This means that you try to include gender topics where you see fit.

In discussions: you can add a question on the difference between men and women, boys and girls.

Participation: Make sure women also participate in activities and feel safe to voice their opinions during sessions.

Motivational speakers: make sure to invite female mentors and/or speakers so that girls in the course can relate to them

In sum, wherever you can, address issues that women face in particularly, such as harrasment, discrimination on the job market or in specific male-dominated sectors based on gender, ..

Time management skills: group work

Time management skills

Peter has been looking for a job for 3 weeks. He spends about 2 hours per week on this. That includes talking to people (networking), job searching, and applying to advertisements. He has not been invited for an interview yet. The rest of the week he has classes and homework, spends time with his family, has to work with his father 1 day per week, plays football with friends, and he sleeps a lot during the weekend.

It’s now Monday. Peter saw 2 new jobs posted on the Friday before that he would like to apply for, but he didn’t start on them over the weekend. He has to write a job application letter for both and submit that along with his CV. Both applications are due by Friday noon. Peter is aware that 1 of his applications can be delivered in person but another one has to be sent. Peter set a reminder for Thursday at 9:30am to make sure that his application letter for the one position was posted in time.

The next two days Peter spent most of his time in classes, on homework, and spending time with friends. On Tuesday night he ran into a friend that he hadn’t seen in a long time. They planned to meet on Friday morning to catch up. On Wednesday, Peter spent some time on the job applications but he didn’t finish either one because he was invited to play football.

Time management skills

On Thursday morning, Peter woke up early to finish the first job application but his father called and really needed help at work. Peter couldn’t say no, so he rushed to finish the application, without updating his CV, and posted it on the way to meet his father. Helping his father took longer than intended and when he arrived home that evening, he was really tired. He decided to again wake up early to finish the other application and drop it off at the company, just after meeting up with his friend.

He did wake up early on Friday morning and finished a very nice application letter, but he did not have time to update his CV. Regardless, he put it all together and went to meet his friend. While with his friend, they were talking so much that Peter lost track of time and at 11:30am he rushed out the door to go deliver his job

application.

In the process, his papers become folded up and did not look very professional. He arrived and delivered them at 12:10pm to the company. The front desk assistant accepted it because it was only ten

minutes late.
