Santa Cruz’s downtown has become a battleground—not over politics or power, but over tacos. A booming taco truck scene has led to fierce competition among vendors, who are vying for the best spots and the largest crowds. Tensions boiled over after Taco Time, a popular local truck, set up shop right next to El Burrito Loco, sparking an all-out "taco war."

Local residents have mixed feelings: some love the variety of tacos, while others are frustrated by increased foot traffic, noise, and long lines. Several vendors have even set up makeshift seating areas that are blocking sidewalks, causing complaints from pedestrians and neighboring businesses. The city’s permitting office is struggling to handle the situation, while the Mayor’s Office is calling for an emergency council meeting to restore order.
