MAIN STYLE BENCHMARK:

This is your closest art style benchmark. The Painting style is where we would like to be. The richness and showing off for some of the British will be spot on - just with a wig.

On the left the original benchmark and how our artists and designers interpreted this:

Alicia Schmidt

6 of 66

STYLE BENCHMARK:

These 2 characters are the closest from the Sheriff of Nottingham - the others from this game may be too exaggerated for some of our characters.

STYLE BENCHMARK:

Krystal Hertlein

8 of 66

STYLE BENCHMARK:

The character on the left and the right are too funny - the other types are good.

9 of 66

STYLE BENCHMARK:

The character on the right is too stiff. Go for more action poses.

The environment piece is good.

10 of 66

STYLE BENCHMARK:

The stamp is good.

STYLE BENCHMARK:

The feast plate and arcane scrolls are in our direction. Remember our format does not allow such a big space. - We get half of that for visuals.

These characters have the right types of color. The body shape variation is too great - making it seem more funny than the direction we would like to go.

STYLE BENCHMARK:

These characters for Mission Red Planet, art by Andrew Bosely, are more in line with the contrast of body shape I would like the game to head towards. We just want the colors from the previous page.

Jillian Oberts

Great characters and environments - The direction of the color should be more like the Sheriff of Nottingham.

The icon ribbon method could work.

STYLE BENCHMARK:

Drew Hill, KCAD alum, has a very good sense of depth in the character , the line around the character is a good direction. This is our look - but we want to not be quite so funny (all the time).

See his tutorial on his painting process at 15:10.

We will use this process but are required to use flats that have to be approved before moving on to the painting.

STYLE BENCHMARK:

Drew Hill - (painting creamy feel with hard edges)

John Adams by Hannah Al-Shaer

22 of 66

STYLE BENCHMARK:

Drew Hill, KCAD alum, has a very good sense of depth in the character, the value is in our direction. We can be funny with the british gentry.

STYLE BENCHMARK:

Drew Hill

Charles Townsend by Alicia Schmidt - Wig exageration!

24 of 66

STYLE BENCHMARK:

Susan Bonner, KCAD faculty, Make your character EPIC feeling - screaming - about to go into WAR! Make poses EPIC not stiff.

See the process on ArtStation.

Notice the wear on the metal - work the look of use into your imaging.

Enlarging each asset shape such as buckles and bells is a good way to pull attention to it.

25 of 66

STYLE BENCHMARK:

Susan Bonner, KCAD faculty, Think about how we are cropping the image before you begin. This piece would need environment most likely - more like how Mission Red Planet game has environment behind the character cards.

See the process on ArtStation.

26 of 66

STYLE BENCHMARK:

Susan Bonner

Frank and Krystal used the idea of the mouth exaggeration.

27 of 66

STYLE BENCHMARK:

This is the farthest extreme on the characterization.

It is TOO FUNNY and Cartoony -it’s the eyes and the hands -

DO NOT do this.

28 of 66

STYLE BENCHMARK:

HANDS

Nice to have square hands for hunks and feminine hands for the ladies, characters looking at wealth would be good.

Sarah Puett did a good job of the hand exaggeration with the Joseph Brant card.

ENVIRONMENT

DESIGN

30 of 66

BACKGROUNDS STYLE BENCHMARK:

Great architecture reference by Drew Hill, KCAD Alum, for shape for the towns. Need to be colored more like Sheriff of Nottingham.

We have really been doing more lighting for environments - this is still a benchmark to hit if we do houses and landscapes.

31 of 66

CHARACTER CARD BACKGROUNDS IDEA BENCHMARK:

Including flags and battle gear and smoke will be good.

32 of 66

Incorporating Shapes into your pieces for exaggeration of the experience...

33 of 66

34 of 66

From here on the images are references

to look at mood.

We will

NOT BE

painting in their style.

35 of 66

BACKGROUNDS IDEA BENCHMARK:

Including shapes that bring attention to events or characters and smoke will be good. - We will finish our painting more and not include graphic shapes in events that are not lighting or smoke. The posing and the camera angle are fantastic here.

CARD

GRAPHIC DESIGN

37 of 66

Gold, Shields, Symbols and Borders may be effective way to make it feel historical and rich for the British.

38 of 66

CHARACTER

CARD FEELING

39 of 66

CHARACTERS

Here Jason Heuser, KCAD alum pushed the idea of George Washington to an extreme, we will push our ideas but need to keep away from contemporary weaponry and use muskets where appropriate.

40 of 66

Characters - can feel heroic (if they are)- Some have much higher points and they should be very strong in their appearance. Really allow the adjectives to push the idea in the imaging.

41 of 66

CHARACTERS

Should be in action poses like these.

Lighting with colored light (Blue, Red and Yellow is how we do our art.)

Do not reference this graphic design.

We will not have monsters.

42 of 66

CHARACTERS

Great example of character about to do something and feeling something - fear - bravery. Accurate use of costumes and weapons. We will just be adding more color like in Sheriff of Nottingham and some more facial and body shape exaggeration.

43 of 66

CHARACTERS

Great example of character about to do something and feeling something.

We will do more shape exaggeration.

This color is almost as bright as the direction.

44 of 66

EVENT

CARD FEELING

45 of 66

EVENTS

Historical Storytelling with anticipation. This work by Paul Collins is at the Public Museum and the Musees see it every day.

46 of 66

EVENTS

Shawn Michael Warren took the Paul Collins Award at Art Prize for this work In a Promised Land. It’s epic storytelling is in our direction. We will not be doing it with direct realism.

47 of 66

EVENTS

We will be dealing with hard issues in our storytelling, allow your special effects to be dramatic like the smoke in Jon McDonald’s piece.

48 of 66

EVENTS

Use other elements like Jon McDonald uses vultures to tell the story of impending hangings.

49 of 66

SPECIAL EFFECTS

On all cards consider fire, moonlight, framing and camera angle that is used in this entertainment piece.

The printing press image may be inspired by Diego Rivera’s Industry Mural. (You would just do a fragment but have it be pulled back.).

The printing press image may be inspired by Diego Rivera’s Industry Mural. (You would just do a fragment but have it be pulled back.).

62 of 66

ITEMS - these are too shiny, crossbow is closer to the direction. Remember that we have about half that space.

These almost have too many colors.

63 of 66

Hanna Al-Shaer really got the color and lighting notes that we want in the deck
