Module 1- Place Value Concepts for Multiplication and Division with Whole Numbers

In Module 1, students will be able to explore place value relationships, express powers of 10 with exponents, convert metric measurements, and multiply and divide multi- digit whole numbers. They will develop their fluency of multiplication using standard algorithm.

Topic A- Students apply their understanding of place value to multiply and divide by powers of 10 and their multiples.

Topic B- Students explore different strategies to multiply multi-digit whole numbers and consider which strategy is most efficient.

Topic C- Students explore different strategies to divide whole number quotients, explore the meanings of quotients and remainders, and develop their understanding of estimation.

Topic D- Students apply their knowledge of multiplication and division to solve real-world multi-step word problems. They also explore how the placement of parentheses matters when solving and writing equations.

Module 2- Addition and Subtraction with Fractions

In Module 2, students work on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators. They also explore how to interpret a fraction as division (the numerator divided by the denominator).

Topic A- Students will explore equal sharing so that they understand fractions as division (numerator divided by denominator). They will use models and long division (also known as vertical form) to represent quotients and remainders as mixed numbers or as fractions.

Topic B- Students will make models to make like units (common denominators). They will then add and subtract fractions.

Topic C- Students apply what they have learned about adding and subtracting fractions to help them add and subtract mixed numbers. They will explore various strategies such as: number bonds, number lines, and the arrow way to represent their mathematical thinking.

Topic D- Students will create line plots from a given set of data. Students decide how to create the line plots based on the data presented to them.

Module 3- Multiplication and Division with Fractions

In Module 3, students use various strategies to multiply and divide fractions. They multiply fractions by whole numbers and by fractions. They divide whole numbers by unit fractions (numerator is always one) and unit fractions by whole numbers. They also convert customary measurements in this unit.

Topic A- Students will find a fraction of a set. They will then transition into finding a fraction of a whole number.

Topic B- Students use area models and number lines to multiply fractions by unit fractions and then fractions by fractions. They also use their knowledge of number sense to reason about the value of products and whether the products will be less than one whole, equal to one whole, or greater than one whole.

Topic C- Students use tape diagrams and number lines to divide a whole number by a unit fraction and to divide a unit fraction by a whole number. Students will have to explain the relationship between division and multiplication.

Topic D- Students apply their knowledge of fractions to compare and evaluate expressions that contain grouping systems (parenthesis).
