VIOLATIONS

Violation

  • A violation is an infraction of the rules.

When a violation occurs the official:

Blows the whistle while simultaneously raising his/her arm with an open palm (signal to stop the clock).

Eight Seconds

  • A team has 8 seconds to move the ball from their back court to their front court.

Out of Bounds

  • A player is out-of-bounds when he/she touches the floor, or any object on, above, or outside the boundary line, except a player.

  • The ball is out-of-bounds when it touches a player, the floor, or any object, including the backboard support or the back of the backboard on, above, or outside the boundary lines.

24 Seconds

  • A team has 24 seconds to attempt a shot.

Jump Ball

Jumpers shall not:

  • Tap the ball until the ball has reached its highest point.
  • Leave their position until the ball has been legally tapped.
  • Tap the ball more than twice.
  • Catch the ball until it has touched a non-jumper or the floor.

Jump Ball Cont’d

Non-Jumpers shall not:

  • Occupy adjacent positions around the circle if an opponent wishes to occupy one of those positions.
  • Enter the centre circle before the ball has been legally tapped.

A violation by any player shall be called immediately and the ball awarded to the non-offending team at the nearest point out of bounds.

Double Dribble

If a player in control of the ball wishes to progress with it, he/she may dribble with one hand.

A player is not allowed to:

  • Dribble the ball with two hands at the same time.
  • Let the ball come to rest on the hand(s) and then continue to dribble.

Double Dribble Cont’d

  • To dribble a second time after the first dribble has ended is a violation and the ball is awarded to the opponents for a throw-in.

The following are not considered as dribbles:

  • Successive shots for a field goal.
  • Fumbling the ball at the beginning or at the end of a dribble.
  • Tapping the ball from the control of another player.
  • Deflecting a pass and gaining control of the ball.

Three Second Rule

  • A player shall not remain in the restricted area (key) for more than 3 seconds when his/her team is in control of a live ball in the front court and the clock is running.

  • Allowances are made when a player attempts to leave, a team mate is in the act of shooting, the player has been in for less than 3 seconds and then begins the act of shooting.

Closely Guarded

  • A player who is holding a live ball on the court is closely guarded when an opponent is in an active guarding position at a distance of no more than one normal step away.

  • A violation shall be called if a closely guarded player with the ball does not pass, shoot or dribble the ball within five seconds. The ball is then awarded to the opponents for a throw-in.

Ball Returned to Backcourt

  • A player who is in control of a live ball in their frontcourt may not cause the ball to be illegally returned to their backcourt. This restriction also applies to throw-ins.

  • The ball has been illegally returned to the backcourt when a player of the team in control of the ball, is the last to touch the ball in their front court, after which that player or a teammate is the first to touch the ball in their backcourt.

  • To illegally return the ball to the backcourt is a violation and the ball is awarded to the opponents for a frontcourt throw-in at the place nearest to the infraction.

Kicked Ball

  • To deliberately kick or block the ball with any part of the leg is a violation. However, to accidentally come in contact with the ball with any part of the leg is not a violation.

Traveling

  • Traveling is the illegal movement of one, or both feet beyond the limits outlined below.

  • When a player with the ball lifts or moves his/her pivot foot from its spot on the floor before releasing the ball from his/her hands to start a dribble, or takes too many steps after picking up the ball when stopping, passing or shooting the player has traveled.

Traveling Cont’d

It is legal to:

  • Fall on the floor while holding the ball
  • Slide on the floor due to momentum
  • Gain control of the ball while lying on the floor
  • Shoot, pass or start a dribble while on the floor
  • Touch the floor with a hand while holding the ball
  • Sit up if lying on the floor

It is illegal to:

  • Roll if sitting, or lying on the floor
  • Try to get up off the floor while holding the ball.

Free Throw

The players in the restricted area places:

  • Shall not occupy places to which they are not entitled.
  • Shall not enter the restricted area, or leave the places until the ball has left the hand(s) of the free-throw shooter.

All the players who are not in these places shall be behind the free-throw line extended until the ball touches the ring, or it is evident that it will not touch it.

An infraction of any of these rules is a violation.

Free Throw Cont’d

  • If a free throw is successful all violations committed by any player(s) other than the shooter are disregarded and the point shall count.

  • If the violation is committed by the free-throw shooter, the point, if made, shall not count and ball is awarded to the opponents for a throw-in from the free-throw line extended.

  • If a free throw is not successful and a violation is committed by a team-mate of the shooter during the last free throw the ball shall be awarded to the opponents for a throw-in from the free-throw line extended.

  • If the violation is committed by an opponent of the shooter a substitute free throw shall be awarded to the shooter.

  • If a violation is committed by both teams on the last free throw, a held ball situation occurs.
