VTaL Visible Teaching and Learning Site

My Inquiry in 2018, was to develop a Purpose-Built Innovative Tool, to enable all elements of the VTaL Framework to be accessible to teachers, in order to accelerate student achievement.

How it All Started

Approximately seven to eight years ago, in my own practice, I was developing and trialing different tools to enable students to achieve in my subject. At the time, I had two x Year 7 classes, two x Year 9 classes, two x Year 10 classes and a Multi-level Senior Class.

  • Lots of classes, lots of students
  • Equal Learning Opportunities for all learners

Developing & Trialling Tools

I started developing and trialling various tools in my teaching and learning setting, relating to Learn, Create, Share, and Visible Teaching and Learning. This was to enable students to achieve in my subject.

  • Rewindable Learning Tools to address lateness and absenteeism
  • Tracking Systems for Teachers and Students
  • Processes to enable students to learn at their own pace
  • Driven by the need to address underachievement

Initial Investigation

Through student voice and feedback I learnt which tools were effective for enabling student progress and achievement to take place. These included Google Sites, Calendars and Tracking Sheets. This would eventually include the use of other VTaL tools.

  • Rewindable Learning Tools to address lateness and absenteeism
  • Tracking Systems for Teachers and Students
  • Processes to enable students to learn at their own pace
  • Driven by the need to address underachievement

Initial Investigation

Discussions with students and colleagues revealed that the way that I was using some of the tools in my subject, was different to the way in which students were accessing learning in some of their other subjects.

  • Rewindable Learning Tools to address lateness and absenteeism
  • Tracking Systems for Teachers and Students
  • Processes to enable students to learn at their own pace
  • Driven by the need to address underachievement

What Happened Next ...

I incorporated the tools that I knew were effective in my subject, as well as other tools that I was trialling (and am continuing to trial), and developed a framework which I named VTaL Visible Teaching and Learning.

  • Rewindable Learning Tools to address lateness and absenteeism
  • Tracking Systems for Teachers and Students
  • Processes to enable students to learn at their own pace
  • Driven by the need to address underachievement

Sharing VTaL ...

I created a VTaL Google+ Community to share various aspects of the VTaL framework that I’d developed. This became a platform for myself and colleagues to share teaching and learning resources relating to Learn, Create and Share.

  • Rewindable Learning Tools to address lateness and absenteeism
  • Tracking Systems for Teachers and Students
  • Processes to enable students to learn at their own pace
  • Driven by the need to address underachievement

Purpose of the VTaL Site

The VTaL Google+ Community didn’t provide much of WHAT VTaL is, or WHY VTaL is useful and effective, it mostly included HOW VTaL was being used … and so, the purpose of the VTaL site is, to guide teachers on the development and use of various VTaL Visible Teaching and Learning tools.

  • VTaL Site for Teachers
  • VTaL Site for Middle Leaders and Senior Leaders

How is this tool Different?

I hadn’t seen a visible teaching and learning model based on teaching and learning in a secondary school environment. This is how the opportunity arose to develop the VTaL Site to work in conjunction with the VTaL Google+ Community.

  • Rewindable Learning Tools to address lateness and absenteeism
  • Tracking Systems for Teachers and Students
  • Processes to enable students to learn at their own pace
  • Driven by the need to address underachievement

Trialling and Feedback

I developed multiple versions of the VTaL Site (version 1, version 2, version 3, version 4) and gained feedback from numerous sources, including MIT Colleagues, Middle Leaders and Teaching Staff.

  • Feedback from Teachers
  • Feedback from Middle Leaders
  • Feedback from MIT Colleagues

Prototype

I have developed a functioning Prototype of the revised VTaL Site https://goo.gl/wZYwys. The site has been designed to give a brief overview of the VTaL Visible Teaching and Learning Framework, an explanation of each of the VTaL tools, examples of the VTaL tools, and links to Practising Teaching Criteria etc.

What Next

The next steps includes:

  • Gaining feedback of the Prototype,
  • Trialling the VTaL Site with new staff, and
  • Refining the prototype into a final design.

Thank you for your time
