Scientific Notation - a shorthand way of writing very large or small numbers.

Ex: 1.2 x 10-5

Base Number

Exponent

Base Number = number between 1 and 9.9*****

  • 1 ≤ x < 10

Exponent = multiplies or divides base number by factors of 10.

  1. Negative = dividing by powers of 10 (smaller number!)
  2. decimal moves left.

2) Positive = multiplying by powers of 10 (bigger number!)

  • decimal moves right.
