Change is a process and it’s already in progress!
There will be a change in scheduling, new programs, a new bell schedule, a new building, new classrooms, new lunch procedures, new bus loads, new traffic patterns, new furniture, new equipment, moving buildings, new parking, new faces, and more!
This will be scary for some, exciting for others, and a little confusing at times.
And?
We all get to experience and lead through this
once-in-a-lifetime process together!
New School, New Programs, and a New Schedule!
We are adopting a “4 X 4 Block” schedule, meaning students will take 8 courses in a year, but will only take 4 classes each semester.
Why do we need a Block Schedule?!

Frequently Asked Questions
How does my child select an Academy? What if they want to be in more than one?
In the MCHS model, our Academies are more like colleges inside of a larger University. Students will select pathways to take that will essentially have them “majoring” in an academy. Some students may experience courses from each Academy throughout their high school career. Our focus is to help our students select courses, both Academic and Electives, that help him or her build a pathway to their future goals.
My child is going to college, why do they need Career Academy courses?
Great question! When we talk to students about “What’s your plan?”, we are working to find out what they want to do after college, because college is really a career academy, right? We are looking for them to find their strengths and to learn more about what they can and want to do well. College and Career Academies are actually a great college savings plan because many times students take a class and realize that it is NOT what they want to do.
Most Career Technical Agricultural Education (CTAE) courses are actually designed to be highly technical and to prepare students for a wide variety of careers - many of which may not even exist yet! There is a focus on professionalism and work ethic as well - these are skills that are always in demand in every field.
We want our students to be ready for whatever post-high school option they choose.
Frequently Asked Questions
What about Milestone and Advanced Placement (AP) and IB testing timing?
We’ve been working on this from the very beginning! Milestones (EOCs) can now be given in both December and May. AP tests are only given in the Spring. For that reason, we will be doing our best to schedule many of our AP courses in the Spring. For those that we cannot, we will hold AP test review sessions in the Spring for those students who took the course in first semester. This is a common practice in other districts who are on a 4 x 4 schedule. We are working with our IB teachers to develop the best course sequence possible and test preparation for our IB students.
Does the 4 x 4 have less instructional hours than our old schedule. How are the teachers going to cover everything?
The time difference is actually minimal. Teachers have been participating in ongoing training to transition to the block. As we began looking at new schedules last year, teachers overwhelmingly were in favor of the 4 x 4 block schedule. Fortunately, our teachers have been teaching block classes two days a week for several years. They are working on new pacing guides and assessment plans now to be ready for the transition. They are also visiting with teachers from surrounding districts on the block schedule to adopt best practices and timelines.

Transformation usually includes a disconcerting reorientation.
Change can either help people to find a new meaning, or it can cause people to close down and turn bitter.
