Reading
We have started our third reading unit, which is focused on comprehension of fiction texts. Students are still focusing on developing ideas and theories about characters. They are also reminded that they can revise their theories as they keep reading in order to develop deeper theories. Students will once again get to work on finding themes in the stories that they are reading and they will focus on strengthening their writing about reading.
Math
We still have a couple weeks left in our fraction and decimal unit. We have started focusing on decimals. Students will work to understand how fractions are decimals and how they can convert fractions to decimals. They will do a lot of work with comparing decimals. We will use our base ten pieces in order to represent and understand fractions.
Writing
We have finished our persuasive essay unit! This week we started unit 3, which focuses on writing literary essays. Students will use the same 5 paragraph essay structure that they used in the 2nd unit throughout the 3rd unit. They will be writing about a specific idea they have about a fiction text. They can write a claim about a character or a theme that is present in a book or short story. They will determine reasons to support their claim and evidence to support their reasons.
Progress Monitoring
On January 26th, students will take home their progress monitoring data to share with you. We originally wanted to send data home on the 12th, but we need more time to complete all the BAS tests. On the 26th, you will receive your student's new BAS score, which is their reading level, and information about how much growth they have made.

Lectura
Hemos iniciado nuestra tercera unidad de lectura, que está enfocada a la comprensión de textos de ficción. Los estudiantes siguen enfocándose en el desarrollo de ideas y teorías sobre los personajes. También se les recuerda que pueden revisar sus teorías mientras continúan leyendo para desarrollar teorías más profundas. Los estudiantes volverán a trabajar en la búsqueda de temas en las historias que están leyendo y se concentrarán en fortalecer su escritura sobre la lectura.
Matemáticas
Todavía nos quedan un par de semanas en nuestra unidad de fracciones y decimales. Hemos empezado a enfocarnos en los decimales. Los estudiantes trabajaran para entender como las fracciones son decimales y como pueden convertir fracciones a decimales. Trabajarán mucho con la comparación de decimales. Utilizaremos nuestras piezas de base diez para representar y comprender las fracciones.
Escritura
Hemos terminado nuestra unidad de redacción persuasiva. Esta semana empezamos la unidad 3, que se enfoca en escribir ensayos literarios. Los estudiantes utilizarán la misma estructura de ensayo de 5 párrafos que utilizaron en la 2ª unidad a lo largo de la 3ª unidad. Escribirán sobre una idea específica que tengan sobre un texto de ficción. Pueden escribir una afirmación sobre un personaje o un tema que esté presente en un libro o cuento. Determinarán las razones para apoyar su argumento y las pruebas para apoyar sus razones.
Evaluación del Progreso
El 26 de Enero, los estudiantes llevarán a casa sus datos de evaluación de progreso para compartirlos con ustedes. Originalmente queríamos enviar los datos a casa el día 12, pero necesitamos más tiempo para completar todas las pruebas BAS. El 26, usted recibirá el nuevo puntaje BAS de su estudiante, que es su nivel de lectura, e información sobre cuánto ha progresado.
