SCHEDULE OPTIMIZATION - SYNCHRO PRO

  • Problem: Look-ahead schedules in our project are affected greatly due to unexpected scope changes and other events.

Underground electric systems were changed on time of construction leading to a huge scope change. These are some example of uncertain events that effects upcoming weeks schedule. (Currently they work in P6 that generates only one scenario)

  • Solution: Using Synchro to create multiple 4D simulation from baseline and scenarios option at once by adjusting tasks, allocating additional resources to plan better schedule
  • Pros: Schedule Optimization (Finding best schedule after scope change), model-based schedule, auto-matching rules.
  • Cons: Steep learning curve.
  • Proposal Statement: Assists in look-ahead planning by selecting best schedule for sudden changes in the project
  • Status: Approved

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT TRACKING - SYNCHRO PRO

  • Problem: Material wastage, trade clashes and idle equipment are problems predominantly found on all the jobsite. Among these (A Crane) idle equipment is the main issue we found on the current jobsite at DPR due to improper planning

(Currently no tools are used in this project site to track equipment, material along the timeline of the project).

  • Solution: By using the Synchro scripts in addition to the data we can create simulations that shows material and equipment activity over the project life-cycle
  • Pros: Better logistics planning, Custom appearance profiles for improved visualization.
  • Cons: Scripting knowledge, needs accurate data.
  • Proposal Statement: Best use of resources and helps in removing time clashes. Additionally assists in digital rehearsal of unique fixtures in life sciences project.
  • Status: Approved

ASSEMBLE DATA EXPORTER

  • Problem: Construction progress is being monitored and updated in the assemble. It has all the construction data which are not effectively used for the 4D simulation as there is no option to export data rich objects/models from Autodesk Assemble.

(Currently the model published in assemble with lots of important data is not used to its potential)

  • Solution: Using this workflow data from Autodesk Assemble can be exported to Excel or PowerBI. Feeding these data from excel to Revit using plugins or Dynamo scripts can help in achieving the perfect model with all data for future 4D BIM implementation.
  • Pros: Reduces task assigning time, Model is updated for future use. Can also make PowerBi visuals directly from synchro pro.
  • Cons: Don’t have any so far, may be implementation might require scripting in dynamo.
  • Current status: Supervisor impressed with the idea, Execution in the second stage - automatically importing properties to Revit.
  • Implementation: Stage 1 -> Export to Excel/PowerBI

Stage 2 -> Add/ Edit properties of 3D model by importing data

from Excel to Revit

  • Proposal Statement: This tool if performed, can assist easier workflow.

GENERATIVE DESIGN FOR MEP - REFINERY

  • Problem: More number of clashes were found in Fire Protection(FP) piping with respect to other MEP systems. It takes lot of time and effort to manually alter these routes without clashes. (Outsourcing to different company to detect and make changes)
  • Solution: For example, as we know FP pipes must be in an higher elevation than other MEPs, we can add constraints such as level, collison and given these boundary conditions, the algorithm provides possible solutions specifying where to move the FP.
  • Implementation: Define criteria and constraints for the design problem. Generative Design uses this information to iterate multiple possible solutions. The solutions are presented for further evaluation. You decide on the optimal solution and click a button to integrate the solution into the model for further development (workflow involves revit model and generative design tool in revit/refinery).
  • Pros: Reduce the work in certain clash detection where the variables are minimum.
  • Cons: Complexity in finding the right variable/ parameter, Initial stage, Solution needs manual evaluation in some cases, Requires high computation and accurate data.
  • Proposal Statement: Algorithmically route MEP systems without clashes
  • Status: Idea Approved and In-progress

Alternative : GenMEP (Commercial)

IMMERSIVE TECHNOLOGY – MR (UNITY/UNREAL 5 – HOLOLENS)

  • Problem: Few clashes detected in Navisworks were not able to visualize properly, hence it affects the coordination. (Currently there are no AR/VR applications in this project, which could have improved the BIM-coordination meetings)
  • Solution: By using this tool clashes from Navisworks can be made into an interactive and immersive mixed reality of the model that helps in decision making and predicting the problems ahead
  • Pros: Free (without Hololens can use simulator), Can be updated in few steps, Increased safety, Cost reduction, Speed of decision making
  • Cons: Difficult to implement at first, needs scripting, some experience in game engines.
  • Proposal Statement: A tool that can provide mixed reality for the end user on the site to take key decisions
  • Status: Approved and in-progress

Alternative : Trimble XR10 Hololens

BLENDERBIM

  • How it can help: To create customized and parametric 3D models which are difficult to be built in traditional software and 4D simulations and clash detection
  • Pro: Open source (Free software), Better prospective
  • Cons: Needs an intermediate level of 3D modeling skills in any modeling software, Assigning tasks in 4D is difficult
  • Status: Rejected. With the current life science project, implementing BlenderBim irrespective of its advantages, it would be time consuming and a strenuous task

PILOTING - CMBUILDER

About:

Our supervisor (Adam Weis) from the current project at DPR is assigned to pilot and test the tool.

Pros: 3D Parametric modeling, 4D Simulation, Quantity takeoff, Markups and reviews

Cons: License cost per number of projects, interoperability.

Status: Working on it to see the use case in the assigned project.

ADD-ONS [REVIT PLUGINS]:

  • Microdesk accelerator: It enhances MEP designers' modeling performance by automating simple, frequent steps in their everyday workflow
  • Export-Import excel: Can export to excel available as open source on GitHub
  • Export schedule: For just exporting to excel I use this, because it exports the schedule as is, with the exactly same formatting:
  • Family Editor interface: This plugin can purge unused parameters from families
  • BIM42-Align: For aligning text or anything
