Engineering Fair

Room 25 Projects

Discovery Charter School May 24, 2017

2 of 17

Instructions:

Create a slide that gives as much information as you can about your science (engineering) fair project. Include a title, a description, and an initial “to do” list. Use images and the (limited) drawing tools of Google Slides to add clarity and appeal.

Please be sure to include a title and your name as prominent components of the slide that you create.

Toothpick Tower By Ken & MicHael

The goal of this project is to build a tower with flat wood toothpicks and glue to support a platform that is 25 cm from the base and can hold a load.

We’re trying to make the tower relatively light while still being able to support lots of weight.

To Do List

  • Make six platforms consisting of three hexagonal figures back to back with diamond flat toothpicks, original gorilla glue, and super gorilla glue . The hexagons will consist of six triangles equilateral triangles of the same size. The triangle sides will be toothpicks that have been doubled up for extra strength and stability.
  • In between each platform, place and glue doubled up toothpicks vertically at each intersection point. Then place two perpendicular beams of the doubled up toothpicks in the middle of the previously placed, vertical beams at angle so it forms an “x shape”.
  • Compete in the tower competition and take of video for the failure analysis.
  • Complete the failure analysis.

Reconstructing and building a functioning toilet

To Do List

  1. Research toilets and how they work.
  2. After my research I will draw a diagram and plan out my model.
  3. I will then build a model toilet or working toilet depending on the cost.

Triangle Tower Will and Rianna

Goal: To make a (fairly light) tower that is 25 cm tall and has a strong enough frame to hold as many textbooks as possible. The tower must be made out of toothpicks

To do list:

  1. Make a lot of tiny triangular-based prisms with a hot glue gun (double up the toothpicks for more stability)
  2. Stack those tiny triangular-based prisms to make 3 larger triangular prisms with wood glue or hot glue
  3. Combine those three triangular prisms to make a giant triangle tower made out of triangles
  4. Pour a combination of gorilla glue and wood glue all over the tower to make it sturdy
  5. Take video of tower failing
  6. Do failure analysis and contemplate the meaning of life

Toothpick Tower DanChi

The goal of this project is to make a lightweight tower made of glue and toothpicks. But the tower must be able to hold a lot of weight.

To Do List:

  • Make two towers by stacking the flat toothpicks in the same rotated hexagonal form. Make each joint/verticy stronger by adding (more) hot glue.
  • Stack until each tower is about 9 inches tall (25 cm.)
  • Connect the two towers into one by using a criss-cross formation along the sides.
  • Make a flat platform on top and on the bottom by laying toothpicks side by side across the surface.
  • Complete the toothpick tower challenge at the science fair.
  • VIdeo the weight being stacked on top of the tower to analyze structure failure.
  • Complete structure failure analysis.

lena

Pretty simple. Create a liquid solution with the same chemical/elemental compound as a human and scale it down to match my specific chemical composition. (sent you the doc with all of my work.) In FMAB there was a “recipe” for humans, but it’s incorrect. This prodject basically corrects it and changes it to match me.

This is where i got the incorrect recipe from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9CHly574BQ

My corrections are on the doc.

Homemade Projector

Objective: To make a projector out of a cardboard box and a fresnel lens. The purpose of making this projector was to have a simple and cheap way to project images, videos and projects from almost any device.

Made a demo of the projector. It works well but I still have some things to improve on it like making a bigger door to put the devices in.

*I will make a better diagram on the board.

A 25 cm tall tower that is made of toothpicks and has the ability to support the weight of a stack of textbooks.

We haven’t really decided yet.

Product Prototype - Glove Dryer (Neha)

  • For my brother’s ski gloves
  • Still working on design, but it’ll have a base and two hand templates to place the gloves on
  • The base will either be hollow to place over a vent, or it will have a fan inside of it to transfer the air through the hand template and into the gloves

Making a computer mouse

The GOAL is to create a computer mouse from materials I can find and home, and some I might buy from the store. Hopefully it will be fully function on Laptops/Monitors.

To do list:

  • Research how a computer mouse works, and find out what parts I need to make one.
  • After Research I will find all the supplies I need and attempt to build a computer mouse
  • What ever I have built I will then test on a working laptop, and computer/monitor.
