Lesson 8
Physical, emotional and spiritual completeness
Psalms 139.14-17
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
BASIC BIBLICAL TEXT
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!
BASIC BIBLICAL TEXT
1 Corinthians 6.19,20
19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
20 you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.
BASIC BIBLICAL TEXT
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Thessalonians 5.23
GOLDEN TEXT
* Become aware that the body, as a temple of the Spirit, must be well cared for;
* Understand that the concept of health encompasses the spiritual, emotional and physical areas;
* Identify the care that is necessary to please God through physical, emotional and spiritual development.
OBJECTIVES
Discussions about body care and emotions have occupied a large space within evangelical communities. There are practical issues of a theological nature embedded in this debate, since the Bible says that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Co 6.19,20).
INTRODUCTION
In this lesson, it will be possible to verify that the decisions related to changes and formation of new habits glorify God (Rm 11.36).
INTRODUCTION
PHYSICAL HEALTH
1 - PHYSICAL HEALTH
"Health is preserved by knowledge and observation of one's own body." (Cicero)
1 - PHYSICAL HEALTH
Human body
Feeding
Addictions
The Creator constituted the human body as a complete mechanism, with extraordinary performance among its components. Caring for it in a way that glorifies God means, among other things, good nutrition, balanced use of medicine, proper rest, and regular physical activity.
1.1 – Human body
1.2 – Feeding
Among the aspects that stand out in terms of physical preservation, there is food, which must be healthy, favoring products of plant origin.
1.2 – Feeding
It is also important to control the consumption of salt, sugar, fat and sodium; avoiding excessive ingestion of animal products, soft drinks, fried foods and sausages.
In the Old Testament, the Law of Moses limited the consumption of certain foods (Lev 11; Deut 14.3-21). This control over nutrition was very positive for the people of Israel, in the religious and physical health areas.
1.3 – Addictions
Initially, addiction is presented as something pleasurable; however, in the medium and long term, they bring disastrous consequences to the person, such as the development of physical and emotional illnesses.
1.3 – Addictions
Treatment must include medication, psychological follow-up and, most important of all, deliverance through the Word of God.
EMOTIONAL HEALTH
2 – EMOTIONAL HEALTH
Don't be pessimistic
2 - DEFINITION AND FOCUS
Learn to deal with sadness
Beware of anxiety
Beware of sedentarism
2.1 – Don't be pessimistic
The pessimist is the one who has a distorted view of the facts. He sees circumstances in a defeatist way, overestimating adversity and expecting imminent failure.
Paul teaches about what should occupy the Christian's mind: (...)
2.1 – Don't be pessimistic
whatever is true, whatever is honest, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is is of good report, think about it (Fp 4.8).
2.2 – Learn to deal with sadness
All people invariably face tough times in life. Some are able to overcome them more easily than others. The bad day, the day of sadness, has the potential to transform human beings and make them a better person.
2.2 – Learn to deal with sadness
Understanding how to cope with sadness is an antidote to stress and depression; in addition, it contributes to the conservation of well-being in all areas of life.
2.3 – Beware of anxiety
Anxiety has brought suffering to everyone. Regardless of race, gender, social status, age, religion or country, people have been afflicted by anxiety, which has been called the disease of the century. Jesus gave important guidelines on how to overcome anxiety:
2.3 – Beware of anxiety
wait, trust and believe in God the Father (Mt 6.25,26). The apostle Peter, likewise, already recognizing at that time the destructive effects of this negative emotion, declared: (...) cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you (1 Pe 5.7).
2.4 – Beware of sedentarism
Statistics show that 70% of Brazilians do not practice any physical activity regularly.
A sedentary lifestyle weakens the biopsychosocial structure of men and women, bringing many problems to health.
2.4 – Beware of sedentarism
Thus, overcoming it is of fundamental importance for the person to feel happy and healthy in every aspect.
SPIRITUAL HEALTH
3 – SPIRITUAL HEALTH
Prayer;
Meditation on the Word of God;
Fear of God;
Sanctification
3 – SPIRITUAL HEALTH
3.1 – Prayer
One of the most essential aspects of the Christian life is prayer. Jesus taught us to pray (Mt 6.6); left a model prayer (Mt 6.9-14); and He Himself prayed with His disciples (Matt. 26:36).
Christ also revealed that prayer is a spiritual invigorator (Matt. 26:41).
3.1 – Prayer
Furthermore, Paul’s recommendation to the church on prayer applies at any time: Pray without ceasing (1 Thess 5:17).
3.2 – Meditation on the Word of God
The Bible is the ultimate food for the spirit (Jer 15:16). The Word of God fills the spiritual needs of all who study and are willing to follow it. In addition, it has the ability to reach the deepest regions of a person and solve problems that doctors and psychologists cannot elucidate (Hb 4.12).
3.2 – Meditation on the Word of God
In addition to nourishing the spirit, the Word of God is the Christian's guide, the compass that will lead him to eternal life (Ps 119.105).
3.3 - Fear of God
In Proverbs alone, the word fear is found 14 times. The first verse in which the expression fear of the Lord appears in this book is very suggestive: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction (Proverbs 1:7).
3.3 - Fear of God
It can be said, therefore, that, through the fear of God, the Christian frees himself from the consequences of disobedience. It is, above all, an intelligent and wise attitude.
3.4 - Sanctification
The Lord, who is completely holy, requires of His servants the observance of His example of holiness (1 Pet 1.15,16).
3.4 - Sanctification
In the old covenant, God elected Israel to be his holy people (Exod. 19:6; Lev. 11:44). In the new covenant, the age of grace, He calls the church to sanctify itself in Christ (Eph. 5:26).
Our body, emotions and spiritual life are gifts given by God.
Paul said: If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy (1 Co 3.17). Thus, as the Lord's steward, every Christian must take care of each of these three areas to achieve full well-being and health.

GOD BLESS YOU!
