The CIMS system takes data from all aspects of the project, whether it be Design, Field inspection and testing , Lab testing, Office and PM such as certs, submittals, pay item tracking and budget; and interrelates the data and presents it in a clean useful way in a timely manner.

CIMS has been implemented very successfully on many large complex projects as both a fully deployed system as with the 5600s Progressive Design Project and the US89 progressive design build project, which was the first ever Composite Quality Organization project in Utah; which was made possible by the use of CIMS.

It can also be used in the oversite role, as we are doing on the West Davis Corridor project, where a different organization is performing all the QA testing and inspection. On West Davis we deployed CIMS in a way to be able to aggregate QA and Oversite testing to perform testing validation and pay item verification.

The flexibility of CIMS allows it to be used on various types of projects. It is currently being utilized on several border wall projects, which are large in volume of work but simple scope; so a scaled-down version of CIMS was used to fit the scope of the project.

The CIMS Field app is an ArcGIS based system.

Project design layers are loaded into the system and are available to view in real world earth view. The different layers can be toggled on and off to show the user the data they need to see. The plan sets are integrated with project alignments and interactive to allow the user to click on a location on the screen to see the stationing and offset of that location.

The app utilized the GPS in or connected to the user’s device to show their real-time location on the project. It will display a blue dot on the screen showing the user walking around on the project.

All inspections and tests are geolocated and can be viewed physically on the map. This gives project staff confidence all areas have been inspected and tested by easily being able to identify any gaps.

Data is all shared in real-time which eliminates the duplication of testing and inspections. This is especially beneficial when projects are running day and night crews, since night shifts can easily see where day shifts left off, and vise versa, there is no guessing what has been inspected and tested.

The field app does have the capability to work in offline mode for areas where internet service is spotty or unavailable and the data can all be synced up as soon as the user has an internet connection.

The field app features customizable inspection reports and smart testing modules.

Inspection reports can be customized by individual work types to show specified inspection and testing prompts and questions. This can be done through prompt lists and/or checklist style forms. This allows for clarity on what is required to be inspected for each work type and promotes inspection consistency across all inspectors. This can be especially useful with less experienced inspectors and inspectors who are new to a project. There is no guess work on what or how to inspect.

The smart testing modules are loaded with the material testing requirements. This allows the app to calculate the required number of tests based on the material quantities and provide the user with the random testing and sampling locations and frequencies. This eliminates missed or over testing due to calculation errors by inspectors.

The app also used the material testing requirements to check for testing failures. It notifies the user in the field of the failures allowing them to make decisions or correction at the time of testing, instead of finding out days later when the failure may be buried and difficult to fix. It forces the user to acknowledge the failures and requires an override comment to close the test.

All report and testing modules have the ability to attach documents and photos directly to the reports. While your working on a report or test, it can even open up the camera on your device, take a picture, and automatically attach it to your report.

All reports and tests are linked to project pay items and customizable tags for data aggregation and verification.

Multi-System Integration

Different groups on a project use different software and tools that all feed into the database and get improved and interrelated. Systems use each others information. In the next slides I will go through some of the tools used by field, lab, office/pm groups and discuss how they become interrelated.
