Get the most out of your stats

34 of 70

The Right Process

  • Stat your team’s errors and not your opponent’s earned points
  • Examples:
    • Stat Your Players’ Dig Error or Block Error NOT Opponents’ Kill
    • Your Players’ Receive Error NOT Opponents’ Ace
  • By tracking YOUR players’ actions, you can pinpoint where to make improvements
  • Without knowing where the errors are occurring, it’s difficult to practice and reduce those errors

35 of 70

The Right Process

  • Specific situation:
    • Number 14 passes a ball that is almost a shank but the setter gets to the ball but can’t make a set
    • Instead of statting it as Number 14, 1 pass and a setter error, give Number 14 the Receive Error
    • This means that you are tracking the root cause of the error, not the symptom of the error
  • How to stat this:
    • Number 14, Receive 1…
    • Undo
    • Number 14, Receive Error
  • This way you can take the initial stat, which may turn out to be correct
  • If the team can’t control the ball, you can Undo the original entry and turn it into an Error

Serve and Receive Ratings Explained

56 of 70

Receive and Serve Ratings

  • It’s important to note that each stat taker will interpret the quality of the pass differently. The most important thing is to be consistent from match to match so that the team’s receive ratings do not change due to the mood of the stat taker
  • The following are General Guidelines, you may choose to look at things differently
  • Remember that Receive and Serve ratings are the inverse of each other
    • Receive 3 = Serve 1
    • Receive 2 = Serve 2
    • Receive 1 = Serve 3
    • Receive Error = Serve Ace

57 of 70

Receive Ratings Defined

  • 0 pass or passing error: ball hits the floor, is shanked or is not brought under control enough for your team to return the ball to the opponent's court. See Video
  • 1 pass: poor pass that requires the setter to chase and put up a difficult set or must be returned as a free ball to the opponent. See Video
  • 2 pass: pass is high enough and toward the front of the court such that the setter has more than one setting option. See Video
  • 3 pass: a perfect pass close to the net where the setter can set all attackers including the quick middle set. See Video

58 of 70

Serve Rating Defined

Watch the opponent’s pass - it should be a least twice as high as the antenna

Antenna

59 of 70

Serve Rating Defined - cont.

  • Watch the opponent’s Setter’s feet - in front or behind the 10 ft line
    • This particular Pass is a 2 so it’s a 2 Serve

10 ft line

60 of 70

Serve Rating Defined - cont.

  • Watch the opponent’s Setter’s set - using hands or bumping?
    • Typically bump sets are 1 passes = 3 serves
    • If the setter doesn’t get to the ball at all, it’s typically a 1 pass = 3 serve
