Why is The United Nations’ International Peace Day on September 21st so Important to Observe and Celebrate?

7 of 48

The United Nations’ Day of Peace is observed on September 21st and educates and changes behavior and encourages everyone to act peacefully everyday throughout the year, so any action on Peace Day helps manifest support for community peace building around the world.

The United Nations invites all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.

PEACE Pole History

The Peace Pole is an internationally-recognized symbol of HOPE, UNITY & PEACE, that bears the universal phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth”.

There are an estimated 250,000 Peace Poles in every country in the world.

They are dedicated as monuments to PEACE.

Peace Poles give us a place to

“STAND UP” for PEACE as a community.

The Peace Pole Project was started in Japan by Masahisa Goi (1916-1980), who dedicated his life to spreading the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth”.

Mr. Goi was greatly affected by the destruction caused by World War II and the atomic bombs which fell on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

As we plant a Peace Pole in our community, we are linking with people all over the world who have planted PEACE Poles in the same spirit of PEACE.

Meet Co-Founder, Donna Barney NicholsonDonna has been teaching elementary school in Southern California for 29 years with the majority of her tenure with MBUSD. Throughout her professional journey she has been very fortunate to contribute to the education of hundreds of children. She has been a part of many educational programs ranging from whole language and standards based practices to the common core and cognitively guided math instruction. “Although programs may change and shift, one constant element remains key in the education of a child. In order to find success, they must do so from within their own consciousness. If the foundation within a child is balanced, calm and positively charged, they become a sponge, ready to soak up the knowledge all around”. It is her intention to help children achieve and maintain this balance.

Donna is currently a 1st grade teacher at Pennekamp Elementary School and started The Mind Lounge project for Manhattan Beach Unified School District to provide a ”peaceful” space for students. Donn is married, the proud mother of two kind-hearted adult sons raised in Manhattan Beach and “Nonna” to her sweet 3-year old and new-born granddaughters.

Meet Co-Founder, Karen Wooldridge

With over thirty years in the sport and wellness industry, Karen feels fortunate to have worked with industry leaders like adidas, FILA, Under Armour and Beyond Yoga.

She is now utilizing her years of corporate experience to consult, connect and mentor as the founder of The Kare N Connection.  She wants to see people flourish in all areas of their lives and believes how we care and connect at home and at school/work must be integrated. Learning to embrace self-connection and self-awareness is needed for peace to be possible at any age. The success and personal growth she has experienced has given her the platform to speak out and lead as an agent of change for a flourishing future for all. Karen is currently consulting, mentoring, and devoting her time and support to peace-building efforts in her local and global communities. Karen is married and the proud mother of two kind-hearted adult sons raised in Manhattan Beach, CA.
