Your assignment

Create a spoke diagram for 1 of the 3 ethnic groups

Due at end of period today - 1 per group

Divide the students into groups of 3-4. Each group will read the handout for one of the three tribes – Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa-Fulani – and create a spoke diagram about that tribe’s culture and beliefs. There are six different areas they should create main spokes for from the central bubble: Location and Environment; Shelter, Food, and Clothing; Political Organization; Family Structure; Religion/Belief System; and Economy. Pass out the note matrix, and have them fill out the information for their tribe while they’re working on the spoke diagram. When they are done with their spoke diagram (and it may take your students longer than 30 minutes), have space on the walls designated for each of the three tribes to hang them at. Have the students get up and fill out the information for the other two tribes in their note matrix. This should be pasted/taped/stapled into their notebook when they’re finished. If there’s still time left at the end of class, have a group discussion about the differences and similarities between the three groups, or give them a reflective writing assignment on the same topic.
