ZONE: Technology Zone AGE GROUP: 11-14 EQUIPMENT: Laptops, Internet, Projector/Screen

MATERIALS:

Software: Online simulations: The Qubit Game, TiqTaqToe, Quantum Flytrap.DESCRIPTION: This will be a 2 hour interactive workshop where participants will explore the fundamentals of quantum physics and the future of computing. Participants will learn about how Qubits hold information in different states through superposition. They will also experiment with various online simulators that demonstrate quantum logic.

ENGINEERING DESIGN CHALLENGE:

We want to understand how quantum computers process information differently than classical computers and how these fundamental differences allow quantum computers to massively outperform the most advanced classical computers. We will explore these different design elements through simulations that map how qubits test multiple solutions simultaneously

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between traditional computer bits and quantum bits that hold multiple states at once.
  • Explain how qubits use superposition to test multiple solutions simultaneously
  • Experiment with quantum computing models to better grasp the operation of qubits

Hands on : ( Step by Step)

  1. Demonstrate the functions of IBM quantum composer as an important software for running quantum simulations
  2. Play the Qubit Game with the participants and explain the concepts of quantum on display as the game progresses, continue the game only until entanglement is introduced
  3. Switch to TiqTaqToe, an interactive game which adds quantum rules to change the classic tic-tac-toe game. Explain the concept of superposition and probability further using this game.
  4. Direct the participants to the Quantum Flytrap photonic quantum simulation to allow them to experiment with how a photonic quantum computer operates.

Laptops, Internet

25 min

Have the participants test out their program by standing in front of the camera and perform jumping jacks to see if their code accurately counts the number of jumps

  1. The concepts of quantum mechanics can be abstract and confusing, therefore it is very important to remain engaged with the participants throughout and encourage them to ask questions.
  2. All of the tools for the workshop are online, therefore it is important to make sure that the internet connection is stable.
