Now that the participant has a better understanding of public transportation, they will want to use it! Lesson 5 focuses on planning a trip using public transportation. Slides 4 and 5 asks participants to think about trip planning. They need to think about where they are going, and how they can get there. Ask them to think about what tools or resources they could use to help them.

Slides 6 and 7 go over some specific tools the participant can use to plan a trip using their phone. Slide 6 discusses transportation apps and touches on some of the functions of these apps. Slide 7 discusses Google Maps and lists the helpful functions of the app. Ask participants if they know of or have any other apps that are helpful for trip planning. Participants can guide you in what they feel are the most accessible apps.

Slides 8 explains how participants can download transportation apps on their phone. Complete the steps with the participant to insure they have a transportation app downloaded to their phone. Spend some time looking at the different features and help the participant learn to navigate the app. Also make sure the participant understands how to use Google Maps. If not, allow the participant to spend some time practicing with the app.

Slide 9 encourages participants to think of every detail needed to plan out a trip using public transportation. First, brainstorm with the participant and ask them what they think are the important details needed to plan their trip. Next, review the list on slide 8 to see if the participant's ideas match the list. Finally, use the Our Transit Trip worksheet to practice writing out the details for a trip. Decide on a pretend destination and use the phone apps with the participants so they can practice how to use them. As they gather information from the apps, allow them to write out the information on the worksheet.

Slide 10 focuses on safety. It is important to spend a lot of time talking with the participant about how to travel safely. Review the questions at the top of slide 9 and help the participant to think of some solutions. Next, review the list of suggestions for staying safe while traveling. Ask the participant if they agree or disagree with the list. Is there anything they would add to the list?

Slides 11 and 12 enable the participant to apply the knowledge they have learned in this lesson, and previous lessons to different "What If" situations. The situations focus mainly on safety, and a little on etiquette. Read the "What If" situation and see if the participant can match it to the correct solution. After the participant chooses a solution, just click on the screen, and an arrow will appear pointing to the correct solution.
