Create a Strong Password

Don’t use something personal thats easy to find out.

Don’t use words in the dictionary.

Don’t tell anyone.

Log off.

Watch the video and note down some of the key ideas that will help you create a strong and unique password. Pause the video when you need to record your note.

Create a Strong Password

Your password needs at least eight characters.

Choose a phrase that is meaningful to you. This will help you to remember your password.

For example:

  • a line from a song or waiata
  • a phrase or quote from a story
  • a whakatauki

  1. Highlight the first letter of each word in your phrase to create your password.
  2. Can you change any of the letters to a number or symbol?
  3. Can you include a combination of upper and lowercase letters?

Use these common phrases to practise creating strong passwords Use the tips from Slide 5 to help.

Create Your Strong Password

Using the instructions above create a new password ensuring it meets the criteria:

  • 8 characters long
  • A mix of letters, numbers and symbols
  • A mix of capital and lower letters

Remember this password should not be written down.

Create a Strong Passphrase

Use the online diced roller and passphrase list to create your own strong passphrase:

  1. Roll your two dice and note down the word those numbers represent.
  2. Repeat this two more times so that you have three words.
  3. Write your three words down and make the phrase stronger by swapping some letters for:
  4. numbers
  5. capital letters
  6. symbols

For example, fridgeswimbike could become Fr1dge$w!mB1ke
