What is a research concept note?

  • Because it is a foundation for the intended proposal, a research concept note should be well thought through and should be to the point:

    • showing what the research will be about, why it is important do conduct the research, how the research will be carried out (methodology) including a clear timeline of activities and budget requirements.

  • A research concept note is often a 3 to 5 page write up.

What purpose does a research concept note serve?

From the research concept one is able to:

  • Establish whether your intended study is within the areas of interest of the college or the award.

  • Understand if you are really able to do a good job—you actually do not need to write a lot to demonstrate whether or not you will do a good job in the intended study.
