“Is Anything Too Hard for the Lord?”

SCRIPTURE

11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.

12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?

13 And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?

14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

- Genesis 18:11-14

“Is Anything Too Hard for the Lord?”

Russell M. Nelson

President of the Church

2018 - Present

Everyone “knows” that old women do not bear children. So upon whom did the Lord call to bear Abraham’s birthright son? Sarah, at age ninety!...So decreed, she gave birth to Isaac, to carry the crucial Abrahamic covenant into the second generation. Later, for one of the most important events ever to occur, the other extreme was chosen. As all knew that an elderly woman could not bear children, it was just as obvious that a virgin could not have children. When Mary was notified of her sacred responsibility, the announcing angel reassured, “For with God nothing shall be impossible”.

…Turning to our day, have you ever wondered why the Master waited so long to inaugurate the promised “restitution of all things”? …To teach His people, the Lord employs the unlikely…How is it possible to achieve the “impossible”? Learn and obey the teachings of God. From the holy scriptures, heaven-sent lift will be found for heaven-sent duties.

The Miracle(by Shawna Edwards)

MUSIC

For God so loved the world

That He gave His only Begotten Son

That whosoever believeth in him shall not perish

But have everlasting life

Jesus walked upon the water

He stilled the storm and calmed the angry sea

With His hands He healed the leper

He made the lame to walk, the blind to see

He fed a thousand people with a loaf or two of bread

And when the ruler's daughter died

He raised her from the dead

Jesus is a God of miracles

Nothing is at all impossible to Him

But I know this

Of all His miracles, the most incredible must be

The miracle that rescues me

Jesus bled and died to save me

A price that I could never pay alone

When He rose again, He gave me

The greatest gift the world has ever known

Yes, I can be forgiven every time that I repent

And someday He will lift me up to live with Him again

Jesus is a God of miracles

Nothing is at all impossible to Him

But I know this:

Of all His miracles the most incredible must be

The miracle that rescues me

The miracle that rescues you and me

The Lord commands us to flee wickedness

The Lord commands us to flee wickedness

SCRIPTURE

12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:

13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.

14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

- Genesis 19:12-16

The Lord commands us to flee wickedness

Spencer W. Kimball

President of the Church

1973 - 1985

The forces of good are clearly and continually under attack. There are times when it seems the world is almost drowning in a flood of filth and degradation. And I want to cry out, “Hold on! Hold on to what is right and true. Therein is safety. Don’t let yourself be swept away.”

…We, too, are faced with powerful, destructive forces unleashed by the adversary. Waves of sin, wickedness, immorality, degradation, tyranny, deceitfulness, conspiracy, and dishonesty threaten all of us. They come with great power and speed and will destroy us if we are not watchful.

But a warning is sounded for us. It behooves us to be alert and to listen and flee from the evil for our eternal lives. Without help we cannot stand against it. We must flee to high ground or cling fast to that which can keep us from being swept away. That to which we must cling for safety is the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is our protection from whatever force the evil one can muster.

- President Spencer W. Kimball, “‘Hold Fast to the Iron Rod’,”General Conference, October 1978

Dare to Do Right(Children’s Songbook #158)

MUSIC

1. Dare to do right! Dare to be true!

You have a work that no other can do;

Do it so bravely, so kindly, so well,

Angels will hasten the story to tell.

2. Dare to do right! Dare to be true!

Other men's failures can never save you.

Stand by your conscience, your honor, your faith;

Stand like a hero and battle till death.

Chorus:

Dare, dare, dare to do right;

Dare, dare, dare to be true,

Dare to be true, dare to be true.

What did Lot’s wife do wrong?

SCRIPTURE

17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

- Genesis 19:17, 24-26

What did Lot’s wife do wrong?

Jeffrey R. Holland

Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

The…Lord, having had as much as He could stand of the worst that men and women could do, told Lot and his family to flee because those cities were about to be destroyed…With less than immediate obedience and more than a little negotiation, Lot and his family ultimately did leave town but just in the nick of time…Surely, with the Lord’s counsel—“look not behind thee”—ringing clearly in her ears, Lot’s wife, the record says, “looked back,” and she was turned into a pillar of salt.

Just what did Lot’s wife do that was so wrong? …she wasn’t just looking back; in her heart she wanted to go back…It is possible that Lot’s wife looked back with resentment toward the Lord for what He was asking her to leave behind…So it isn’t just that she looked back; she looked back longingly...She doubted the Lord’s ability to give her something better than she already had. Apparently, she thought that nothing that lay ahead could possibly be as good as what she was leaving behind.

Choose the Right(Hymn Book #239)

MUSIC

1. Choose the right when a choice is placed before you.

In the right the Holy Spirit guides;

And its light is forever shining o'er you,

When in the right your heart confides.

2. Choose the right! Let no spirit of digression

Overcome you in the evil hour.

There's the right and the wrong to ev'ry question;

Be safe thru inspiration's pow'r.

3. Choose the right! There is peace in righteous doing.

Choose the right! There's safety for the soul.

Choose the right in all labors you're pursuing;

Let God and heaven be your goal.

2 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

The Lord fulfills His promises in His own time

Spencer J. Condie

Of the Seventy

The Lord makes generous promises, and He certifies that He will not vary from these promises…Sometimes, in our earthly impatience, we may lose sight of the Lord’s precious promises and disconnect our obedience from the fulfillment of these promises. The Lord has declared: “Who am I, saith the Lord, that have promised and have not fulfilled?”…When Abram was 75 years old, the Lord promised him, “I will make of thee a great nation”—this at a time when he and Sarai as yet had no children…And the Lord changed Abram’s name to Abraham and Sarai’s name to Sarah, and when he was nearly a hundred and she was 90 they were promised that Sarah would bear a son to be named Isaac…The Apostle Peter testified that “the Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering” toward us…When heaven’s promises sometimes seem afar off, I pray that each of us will embrace these exceeding great and precious promises and never let go.

MUSIC

1. I am a child of God,

And he has sent me here,

Has given me an earthly home

With parents kind and dear.

2. I am a child of God,

And so my needs are great;

Help me to understand his words

Before it grows too late.

3. I am a child of God.

Rich blessings are in store;

If I but learn to do his will,

I’ll live with him once more.

4. I am a child of God.

His promises are sure;

Celestial glory shall be mine

If I can but endure.

Abraham obeyed the Lord

SCRIPTURE

1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did try Abraham and said unto him, Abraham. And Abraham said, Behold, here am I.

2 And the LORD said, Take now thy son, thine only Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains of which I will tell thee.

11-12 And Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac, his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

14-15 And the angel said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him; For now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only Isaac, from me.

Abraham obeyed the Lord

L. Tom Perry

Former Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Abraham’s faith was tested in a way that many of us would consider unimaginable. I have contemplated on many occasions the story of Abraham and Isaac, and I still do not believe I fully comprehend Abraham’s faithfulness and obedience…how did he take all those steps alongside his son Isaac over the three-day journey to the base of Mount Moriah? How did they carry the wood for the fire up the mountain? How did he build the altar? How did he bind Isaac and lay him on the altar? How did he explain to him that he would be the sacrifice? And how did he have the strength to lift the knife to slay his son? Abraham’s faith empowered him to follow God’s lead with exactness up until the miraculous moment when an angel called out from heaven, announcing to Abraham that he had passed his agonizing test…When Abraham demonstrated his unwavering faithfulness and obedience to God, even when commanded to sacrifice his son, God rescued him. Similarly, when we demonstrate our faithfulness through obedience, God will ultimately rescue us.

Tell Me, Dear Lord(Children’s Songbook #176)

MUSIC

1. Tell me, dear Lord, in thine own way I pray,

What thou would'st have me say and do today.

Teach me to know and love thy will, O Lord;

Help me to understand thy loving word.

2. I would be guided by thy loving hand;

Would hear thy voice, obey thy blest command.

Each moment just to know that thou art near

Will strength impart and banish ev'ry fear.

Heavenly Father sent His Son, who sacrificed Himself for us

SCRIPTURE

8 And Isaac spake unto Abraham, his father, and said, My father! And he said, Here am I, my son.

9 And he said, Behold the fire and the wood. But where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

10 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering…

16 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked; and behold, behind a thicket, there was a ram caught in it by his horns.

17 And Abraham went, and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

Heavenly Father sent His Son, who sacrificed Himself for us

Dallin H. Oaks

Of the First Presidency

The Lord spoke to Abraham and told him to take his only son, Isaac, and go to the top of a mountain in the land of Moriah “and offer him there for a burnt offering.” The first time I read this story I didn’t know what a burnt offering was. But I lived on a farm with animals and mountains nearby, so I could easily understand the rest of the story.

When I was older, I learned that the experience of Abraham and Isaac was what the scriptures call a type, which is a likeness or reminder of something else. The Book of Mormon prophet Jacob said that the command for Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac was “a similitude of God and his Only Begotten Son.” This story also shows the goodness of God in protecting Isaac and in providing a substitute so he would not have to die. Because of our sins and our mortality, we, like Isaac, are condemned to death. When all other hope is gone, our Father in Heaven provides the Lamb of God, and we are saved by his sacrifice.

- Elder Dallin H. Oaks, “Bible Stories and Personal Protection,”General Conference, October 1992

He Sent His Son(Children’s Songbook #34)

MUSIC

How could the Father tell the world of love and tenderness?

He sent his Son, a newborn babe, with peace and holiness.

How could the Father show the world the pathway we should go?

He sent his Son to walk with men on earth, that we may know.

How could the Father tell the world of sacrifice, of death?

He sent his Son to die for us and rise with living breath.

What does the Father ask of us? What do the scriptures say?

Have faith, have hope, live like his Son, help others on their way.

What does he ask? Live like his Son.
