Rationale for Projects

  • The study of US history and civics are critical elements of a public school education- “democratic education” or “democratic core” (Beane, J. & Apple, M.).
  • There have been recent, rapid changes to fundamental institutions in the United States.
  • All public schools should have accurate and relevant social studies and history curriculum.
  • We need to explore new resources and texts.

Changes to New Map- US History

  • Synthesized 15+ units into 5.
    • Increased comprehensiveness, complexity, and depth.
  • Connected each unit to an overarching theme, i.e., economics and aligned post-assessments to theme.
  • Added Reconstruction Era as first unit.
    • Continued from the end of 8th grade social studies.
  • Redeveloped Significant Tasks.
  • Provided “suggested primary sources.”
