  • DocSong writing is a slow process. While this presentation covers the whole process we have more here than we can do.

Today We are not shooting for finished whole songs

We’re looking to work the process enough to understand it and its potential

WORDS FIRST: THE STORY

MODERN BAND

So I was 2 and I was in my mothers arms and she put me on the ground for second and I crawled into the middle of the road and my dad saw me and my dad saw me and jumped in front of a car and and got hit by a car. My mom and dad told me when I was seven. I thought that it was crazy that my dad jumped in front of the car for me. He did it to save my life. My dad has been hit by a car 3 times

When I was five I was upstair in my moms room and I took some tweezers and I stuck them in an outlet. The whole room went black and my dad came up and told me I almost died. Now I know that if I put it in I get shocked. I didn’t get shocked, I just broke the house. We had to get the house we had to fix the fusebox.Questions:

What kind of car was it? I think it was a jeep

What was your mom doing? She was just like looking around saying where did Henry go? And she was really scared when she saw me in the road. Type it

II. Lyrics into Song: Add Rhythm

Modern Band

50

  • Ask Story source to “say “ how they hear the song’s rhythm while you keep a steady beat.

  • If the story source is unsure where to start, begin by stretching syllables/ vowel sounds.

  • Sometimes shifting the beginning of a phrase back or forward in time can make a big difference in the feel of the rhythm

  • Use some kind of notation to preserve rhythms that your story source prefers

Rap Talk

P411

This lesson asks students to “rap talk” over a steady beat the words don’t have to rhyme. The point is to pay attention to the rhythm of the words. This dovetails into DocSong’s process and can help students discover their melodic rhythm.

II. Lyrics into Song: Add Melody

Modern Band

55

  • The next step is to add a melody to your verse and refrain.
  • Ask your story source to sing what they think the melody should be, using the rhythm you decided.
  • Look for melodic direction and gestures you can help elaborate on
  • If suggestions are needed use some of the makin’ moves questions to help direct your collaboration.

Makin’ Moves: Suggestion starters

Modern Band

56

There are only Three places a melody can start: High Middle and Low. Where do you want to start?

There are only three ways a melody can go from there: It can stay on the same note, it can go up and it can go down. Where should it go next?

There are only three ways it can make that move: It can move a little, a little more, or a lot (step, skip, or leap). How much should we move, a little, a little more, or a lot?

Modern Band

58

  • Determine the key you’re in
  • Look for chords that might fit your melody. The most common chords are I IV V or i iv V
  • Usually melodies start from the I chord (but not always!)

59 of 72

III. Lyrics into Song: Add Harmony: Map the Changes

Modern Band

59

  • Play the first chord while singing the melody and ask the story source/class where/if the chord change should take place
  • Try options for the next chord with the story source/class and decide
  • Play what you have continuing on the second chord asking where the next chord change should take place
  • Repeat steps 2 and 3 until your verse has chords!

III. Lyrics into Song: FORM

Modern Band

66

  • Once you have a chord progression for your verses you have some decisions to make!
  • If I already chose to have a chorus, what chords should be in it!?
  • Do I need some other elements for my song? A chorus? A bridge?
  • These are questions that are best answered with the story source.
  • Often a bridge is a good way to add interest and contrast to a song, especially when there is no chorus.
