VITAMIN D IS A HORMONE, NOT A VITAMIN. THE SKIN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PRODUCING VITAMIN D. DURING EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT, ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION PENETRATES INTO THE EPIDERMIS AND PHOTOLYZES PROVITAMIN D3 TO PREVITAMIN D3. PREVITAMIN D3 CAN EITHER ISOMERIZE TO VITAMIN D3 OR BE PHOTOLYZED TO LYMISTEROL AND TACHYSTEROL.

Vitamin D is important for skin health because:
SOURCE OF VITAMIN D
Sunlight is the cheapest source of vitamin D.
it converts 7- Dehydrocholesterol in the skin to vitamin D.
The richest sources are liver oils. Vitamin D is also present in smaller quantities in dairy products such as butter and eggs, milk has a very low content of vitamin D.

VITAMIN D PROMOTES THE ABSORPTION OF CALCIUM AND PHOSPHORUS FROM SMALL INTESTINE. THE ACTION OF VITAMIN D HELPS IN D.N.A. SYNTHESIS, TO FORM CALCIUM BINDING PROTEIN, ALPHA GLOBULIN AND IS INVOLVED IN CALCIUM ABSORPTION.
VITAMIN D MAINTAINS THE PROPER CONCENTRATION OF CALCIUM AND PHOSPHORUS IN BLOOD BY REABSORPTION OF PHOSPHORUS FROM THE URINARY TUBULES.
