Arwyr - Life’s a box of chocolates!
Introduction to our topic - ‘Heroes’ and pupil voice KWL
First, to start our topic we had a box of ‘heroes’ with chocolate inside of the box, and we thought we were going to eat them. But our topic was about chocolate, and it was called ‘Arwyr’ - ‘Life’s a box of chocolates’ . We used Google Slides to say what we ‘know’ and ‘want to know’ about chocolate. We are learning about making more chocolates and different flavours. Then we made a chocolate shop, and we are looking at the size of the chocolates.
Role play / Introduction to the ‘Person, Place, Problem’
So we had a screen call with Mr Holt and he said that we need to help him. He had a problem; it is that he is not selling enough chocolate. He has a shop called Melin Llynon in Anglesey. It was amazing but people aren’t buying chocolate anymore.
Mass - using scales and reading g/kg
Mr Holt found that chocolates were weighing too much and this made the cost of delivery too high. We needed to explore the different weights of chocolates. We used scales to weigh how much they weighed. We measured the chocolates in grams and kilograms.
Writing newspaper reports
We wrote newspapers about Mr Holt’s chocolate shop, Melin Llynon, where you buy chocolates from, in Anglesey. We used ‘wow words’, headlines, who, where, when, why sentences, columns, captions and pictures, quotes using direct speech and past tense vocabulary.
Money - using £ and p, converting £ to p and vice versa, making totals, finding amount of change
Mr Holt’s prices are dropping because his chocolates aren’t selling. Mr Holt asked for help from us. We are making more creative chocolates and we will help him by selling chocolates to our school. We have been exploring making pounds and pence, enhancing pounds and pence coins, making totals and finding amounts of change.
Recording an iMovie interview with Mr Holt
We did an interview pretending to be Mr Holt. We did this task with a partner. We talked about his shop, Melin Llynon in Anglesey. We added some features like filters and sounds on iMovie.
3D shapes/packaging
We are going to design packaging to sell our chocolates in. Before we could make the packages, we needed to explore 3d shapes. We looked at different shapes like cube, cuboid, cylinder and sphere. We have been counting faces and edges so that we will be able to build the packaging shapes correctly.
Market research - email and data collection
Before we can make the chocolates, we need to do some research. We are going to email Dosbarth Twyni, asking them questions yn Gymraeg. Our big questions is “Beth wyt ti’n hoffi?”. We will then collect and show the data when planning our chocolate recipes.
Taste testing and chocolate melting
We are going to try some different chocolates. Some might taste good, and some might not. We are going to find out which chocolates taste best by trying lots of different flavours out. This will help us to plan and make yummy recipes.
Chocolate recipes
We will use the data from our research to plan recipes for our chocolates. We are going to make some recipes which make some mouth watering, fantastic chocolates. We’re going to sell them to the parents and children in our school, and we hope that they will like them.
Packaging design & posters for entrepreneur week
Once we have designed eye-catching packages for our chocolates, we will be creating posters to advertise our chocolate sales.
Making chocolates
So when we are making chocolates, it will smell fantastic and will taste incredible. We will try to make a really good chocolate and we hope that the chocolate is great. We hope that it will help Mr Holt and hope it will boost sales by bringing in more customers.
Selling to parents
We are going to sell the chocolates to the parents, your parents might be lucky and get one of our chocolate bars that we will sell. But that’s the last thing that we will do. If the parents like the chocolates, then we’ll sell them to Mr Holt to help him. Hwyl fawr.
Visit to Mr Holt’s chocolate factory
To conclude our fantastic topic, we will be taking a trip to Anglesey to visit Mr Holt’s chocolate factory.
We will meet Mr Holt himself, and take a tour around his factory to see for ourselves how his wonderful chocolate is made.
We are very excited!
