1. Show & Tell→ Open your Fridge, 10 min

Objective/s: Interaction in TL, Physical Movement, Brain-breaker

Mode/s: Presentational, Interpersonal

Proficiency Level/s: All Levels.

Steps:

  • Everyone (including the T) gets up, goes to your family fridge: open the fridge and take out a special object that you want to share w/ the class.
  • T modeling: e.g. 拿一瓶“老干妈” → 大家好,这是我想给大家介绍的,我常常在吃饭的时候用它......你觉得它是辣的还是咸的?
  • Ss then take turns to present the object in TL, and invite other Ss to ask Qs following the presentation.
  • (You may ask Ss to put the object back to fridge after sharing)

NOTES:

-- Use Chinese as much as possible;

-- Yes, instead of using an object from the fridge, Ss can introduce their pets in the class next day.

2. You (don’t) have time to do..., 10 min

Objective/s: Interaction in TL, Physical Movement, Brain-breaker

Mode/s: Presentational, Interpersonal

Proficiency Level/s: All Levels.

Steps:

  • Everyone (including the T) thinks one thing that you have time to do during the quarantine, and then gets up to get one object that you can represent that thing (e.g. If you have time sleeping, you can take a pillow; If you... cooking, …a pan).
  • T modeling in TL: e.g. 我在家Quarantine的时候,我有时间和我的猫玩儿,这是我的猫Happy Feet和Valachi...
  • Ss then take turns to present the object in TL, and invite other Ss to ask Qs following the presentation.
  • (You may ask Ss to put back the object after sharing)

NOTES:

-- Use Chinese as much as possible;

-- Ss can choose an object that represents things that they don’t have time to do in the next day class.

-- T can ask Ss to put all the objects in front of the camera & take a screenshot.

3. Strange Art Cosplay Mini-project, 30+ min

Objective/s: Interaction in TL, Physical Movement, Inspire Creativity

Mode/s: Presentational, Interpersonal

Proficiency Level/s: All Levels.

Steps:

  • Before the class, Ss were assigned to identify a famous painting and try their best to cosplay the painting. Have Ss take a picture of their cosplay & email you both the cosplay picture and the picture of the original painting.
  • Ss are encouraged (or required) to write a short essay to explain why they chose that painting, what challenges they encountered in the cosplay, what fun things they found, & what creative ideas they had in making the cosplay as vivid as possible...
  • In the class, Ss take turns to present their mini-project in TL, and other Ss are invited to ask follow-up Qs.

NOTES:

-- Ss can ask their family member to help, if needed.

-- You can suggest Ss to explore websites of museums(Met,MoMA...)

4. The Store Discussion (Information Gap), 10 min

Objective/s: Interaction in TL, Guided Practice,~ Taboo + Information Gap

Mode/s: Interpersonal

Proficiency Level/s: All Levels.

Steps:

  • T conducts mini-lesson on target vocab & patterns, e.g. store names, & descriptive patterns “这是...的;大家可以在这里...”
  • Have 2 Ss close their eyes or turn their back to the screen, T presents the slides with pictures of store names
  • T ends the slides sharing, then have other Ss give clues in TL to help the 2 Ss figure out the store names.
  • The class can have several rounds of this activity so that everyone can both guess and give clues in TL.

-- Depending on class size, Ss can play this activity/game in small group via Zoom breakout rooms.

5. The Screen Walk (you say, I do), 10 min

Objective/s: Interaction in TL, Physical Movement, Brain-breaker

Mode/s: Interpretive

Proficiency Level: Novice

Steps:

  • T have Ss follow the instructions in TL & follow T’s modeling: Take out a piece of paper, draw a small person figure (小人) with a head and a body. Use your hand to tear up the paper and take out the person figure. Give him/her a name.
  • T says in TL: Now make your figure to quickly walk to the left, to the right, slowly walk to the top, the bottom, make a MJ’s famous moonwalk, dance with classmate A’s figure, etc. Ss follow along.
  • You may then ask individual Ss to give their own instructions in TL.

NOTES:

-- Allow Ss to casually & respectfully comment on each other’s person figure.

6. My Own Photo Story Mini-project, 30+ min

Objective/s: TL Interaction, connect personal experience/community

Mode/s: Presentational, Interpersonal

Proficiency Level/s: Novice high & above

Steps:

  • Before the class, Ss were assigned to identify a most meaningful photo in their cellphone album that they feel comfortable to share w/ the class. (This photo could be the most special/important/touching/ happinest one... ). Ss were also required to insert the photo to a google doc & then write a narrative to tell why she chose this one & what the story about the photo… in TL.
  • In the class, Ss take turns to invite the class to “see-think-wonder” on the photo & then reveal the answers in TL to the class. Allow other Ss to ask follow-up Qs.

NOTES:

-- Remind Ss to share only photos they’re comfortable of sharing.
