Home-School Collaboration Follow Up

Grade

3

Home-school collaboration is essential to getting students to grade level.

You are not alone!

Find a partner like the Family Coordinator to be your buddy.

1. Meet with your child’s teacher to make a plan. You don’t need to wait for conferences.

    • What will the teacher do?
    • What can you practice at home?
    • What growth should we see?

2. Check on your child’s reading data every month.

12 of 47

Winter Aimsweb Plus and MAP data

At LCPS (Lodestar/Lighthouse TK-5), we have started a new round of testing to measure students progress in reading.

Now you will be able to tell if your student had GROWTH, stayed the SAME, or went BACKWARDS

Have a conversation with your student’s teacher about the root cause for their progress.

Ask your teacher about the quality of your student’s practice. Are they practicing the right skill, in the right way, for the right amount of time?

If your student is significantly below where you think they should be, your student’s teacher can share intervention options (extra support)

Our Call to Action

Norma Garcia

FIA Parent leader, Lodestar

Hello, my name is Norma Garcia and I am a parent leader of 2 students at Lodestar. David is in 9th grade and Gabriel is in 6th grade. I have lived in Oakland for 15 years, and have been part of the Lodestar community since 2016. I started with FIA because I saw the importance of empowering parents to be involved and have the knowledge of how their students are doing and need to be successful.

As a mom and part of the Oakland community, I have seen how many children fall behind academically because there is no connection or unity between parents, students, and teachers. Why are we as parents not involved and become invisible when it comes to our children's education? We should not be ashamed to be there. We have to make that connection so that our children can move forward. It is not only the teachers' job but the parents' job as well.

It would be easy to remove our children from a school, but all schools have imperfections. We need to work on our schools in the community and invest our support and our resources. I've been pleased that this year we have had the opportunity to have the Lit 4 Literacy Institute exclusively for Lodestar and Lighthouse parents.

Next year, Lodestar is going through its Charter renewal. How are you, as parents who are at this institution, going to invest your time for the community school? We as parents need to let other parents know where their children are academically and show the board what impact Lodestar has on the community. I want to invite all of you students to join us in raising our students' reading to 100%. Who's with me?!
