The barbarians set up kingdoms that were always at war with each other.

Europe was a very violent and unstable place.

Things like the Christian religion and education that had been promoted during the Roman empire seemed to be dead and gone.

...and then came CHARLEMAGNE!

  • Charlemagne was the king of the Franks and the first great ruler of the middle ages.
  • The Franks were Christians, and Charlemagne wanted to make everyone else in Western Europe Christian too.

Charlemagne

  • He united all of the fighting Western European kingdoms and made it stable
  • His reign helped establish the tradition of European kingship
  • Whenever he conquered a new tribe, he would make them convert�to Christianity

When Charlemagne died...

  • Quarrels divided the empire and it quickly collapsed
  • Noble families gained power and took control of separate regions
  • Vikings gained power and began killing and stealing
  • People were no longer safe
  • People needed protection
