Before you begin:

Select one person to share their copy of this document with the others in the group. You should all be following along and adding information to the powerpoint. Divide and conquer!

All group members should be on the website on their own chromebook so you can go through the tutorial together. (only one screen shot of the completion certificate is needed)

You will need a device with a camera (use your chromebook). All pictures MUST include at least one of your group members in the shot. Have fun with this! They can be goofy if you’d like!

Only ONE copy of this finished powerpoint needs to be turned in for your partnership/group.

Safety in the Chemistry Lab

Directions: Follow the steps in order and answer the questions as you go. You will be answering questions both in this document and by using an online simulator. Successful completion of this assignment is required in order to participate in labs in chemistry class! If you are unable to complete this assignment with a score of at least 80%, you will be asked to redo it before you will allowed in the lab.

I have read and understand the directions for this assignment: ← Type an “X”

  1. Go to www.ncbionetwork.org/iet/labsafety/

  • Click anywhere to begin using the simulator.
  • Type the first name and last initial for each group member in the

textbox on the screen. Click "CONTINUE".

  • Watch and listen to Skip as he shows you around the lab.

Click the link to begin.

List the four changes that Skip needed to make in order to safely enter the lab:

  1. ____________________________ 3. ____________________________
  2. ____________________________ 4. ____________________________

Chemistry Lab Attire

  • Follow Skip into the lab and read the prompts that list the required elements of PPE in the lab.

    • What are the minimum PPE requirements for general lab work?

  1. ____________________________________
  2. ____________________________________
  3. ____________________________________

IMPORTANT NOTE: you are NOT required to wear a lab coat or nitrile gloves. I do have aprons and gloves available upon request. You are, however, REQUIRED to wear safety GOGGLES (not glasses). Goggles will form a seal around your eyes preventing chemicals from splashing into them. Googles are available to purchase at the Warrior Warehouse and can be stored in the classroom.

Lab Safety Scenarios

  • Now you will be introduced to Prudence. She will guide you through several scenarios. Below, the first few words of each scenario have been quoted for you. Select the safety item on the screen that offers the best solution for each scenario.

Scenario 1: You’re finishing up an experiment when suddenly, the building alarm begins to sound…

What should you do?

Scenario 2: You hear a loud crash behind you. You’re coworker has accidentally dropped a glass bottle…

What should you do?

Scenario 3: What should you do with that broken glass?

What should you do?

Lab Safety Scenarios (continued)

Scenario 4: Your colleague is using a Bunsen burner to heat a solution…

What should you do?

Why should you avoid using safety tool you selected while they’re standing up?

Scenario 5: You’re working on an experiment with a Bunsen burner…

What item should you use in this emergency?

Lab Safety Scenarios (continued)

Scenario 6: A colleague working near you has incorrectly added water to a container of acid…

What item should you use to help her?

Briefly describe the correct technique to use the safety tool you selected above.

Why is it important to wear safety GOGGLES and not safety GLASSES in the lab?

Scenario 7: Let’s say you’re working with dimethyl sulfoxide…

What item should you use in this emergency?

Describe the actions that need to be taken to safely help yourself.

NOTE: The next segment of the simulation refers to the documentation of incidents in the lab. You do not need to worry about this.

Chemical Safety

  • After Prudence and Skip briefly go over incident reports, you will follow Prudence further into the lab to discuss the importance of Safety Data Sheets.
    1. Prudence explains that there are 16 different sections in a safety data sheet. Please list the section title for the following sections:

Section #1: ___________________________

Section #2: ___________________________

Section #4: ___________________________

Section #7: ___________________________

Section #13: ___________________________

Safety Data Sheets & Bottle Labels

  1. Prudence will invite you to read the safety data sheet on isopropyl alcohol. Turn to the fifth section titled “Firefighting Measures”.
    1. Write the first sentence listed next to “Specific Hazards” below:

  • Turn to the ninth section titled “Physical and Chemical Properties”.
    • What is the listed appearance of of isopropyl alcohol?

    • What is the boiling point?

  • Prudence will then show you how to read a chemical bottle label. Follow the prompts and answer the questions displayed on the screen. Click”CONTINUE”. You may now move on to the next slide in this slideshow.

A Pictogram is Worth 1,000 Words

  • Skip joins us once again and asks for your help on a new poster about chemical safety. Follow the directions in the simulation and when you are done with the task, take a screenshot of your completed pictogram poster and insert it to the right. → → →

Safety in the Chemistry Lab

  • Read through the "Safety Equipment: Activity" slide and read the directions. Click "LAUNCH ACTIVITY".

  • Read the instructions and click "CONTINUE". Complete the activity reading the feedback given for all answers. Take notes as needed.

  • Complete the Safety Response Knowledge Check. Read through the feedback given for incorrect answers and take notes as needed.

  • Read through the "Following Lab Procedures" slide, taking notes as needed. Now read it again, this time out loud. Type the first sentence of the slide into the box below:

It is your responsibility to read and annotate the lab procedure BEFORE the day of the lab. I WILL NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS PERTAINING TO THE LAB PROCEDURE once the lab has started. If you do not follow the lab procedure, lab safety rules or use the lab equipment correctly, you will lose points. If you are putting yourself or others in danger you will be asked to leave the lab and will earn a zero with no opportunity to make up the points.

Type each group member’s initials in the box to let me know you have read the bolded paragraph above and understand that participating in chemistry labs is a privilege.

Safety in the Chemistry Lab

  • Unfortunately, accidents can happen in the lab. If chemicals were to splash in your eyes, it is critical that you flush them out by using an EYEWASH STATION.

When you turn it on, water flows out of the spouts and you would hold your eyes open and move your face/eyes into the flow of water. The picture to the left shows an eyewash station from our lab. Locate this eyewash station and use complete sentences to describe its location in the box below. Be specific!
