Here’s What...Is Required by ISBE/IDPH

“The minimum public health requirements that all public and nonpublic schools must meet as they create local reopening plans in Phase 4 are to:

  • Require use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including face coverings;
  • Prohibit more than 50 individuals from gathering in one space;
  • Maintain 6 ft. social distancing at all times;
  • Require that schools conduct symptom screenings and temperature checks or require that individuals self-certify that they are free of symptoms before entering school buildings, including wearing complete PPE when conducting symptom follow up assessments; and
  • Require an increase in schoolwide cleaning and disinfection.”

Here’s What...Are Recommendations by ISBE

  • Provide as much face-to-face (synchronous) instruction as possible, including a recommended 2.5 hours of synchronous instruction daily, based on students’ developmental levels (7/23/20 ISBE Guidance Doc).
  • Ensure that students identified with IEPs, with 504 plans, or as ELs get additional time/support/access to in-person learning.
  • Consider more in-person learning for younger students if possible.
  • 5 clock hours of student engagement required daily.
  • Daily attendance and engagement of students is expected regardless of learning mode.
  • Grades will be issued based on performance.
  • Be ready at all times to pivot to another instructional learning model.

Here’s What...Is Currently Happening

  • All ISBE, LCHD, IDPH, and CDC guidelines in place.
  • PreK and Self-Contained Special Education students are able to attend in-person 4 days/week if families choose.
  • Select IEP-entitled students attend in-person on Wednesdays.
  • Students/families invited in on as-needed basis for assessments/screenings and direct support.
  • All students not listed above are completing full remote learning with all parameters in place.
  • Staff report onsite at least 2 days per week unless they meet qualifying medical/childcare criteria. If working remotely, professional expectations are in place.

What’s “Tight” in Planning for Re-Opening?

  • We will launch the Hybrid model developed this summer and approved by the Board of Education, with the exception of K using AM/PM model.
  • Our goal is to get as many kids on site for learning as is safely possible for them and for our staff . All safety parameters will be kept in place and closely monitored including student cohorting. We will use the dashboard metrics to review our position.
  • We must ask families for their preference--they must be allowed to choose remote until IL enters Phase 5.
  • Staff will be onsite at least 4 days per week, unless unable to do so.
  • This may lead to some schedule/teacher changes as we re-build based on in-person and remote requests, but we will limit this to the extent possible.
  • We will remain ready to pivot to full remote at all times and ready to move to full in-person when data or guidance.

What’s “Tight” in Planning for Re-Opening?

  • Instruction will continue--Monday/Tuesday will not be repeated Thursday/Friday.
  • Instruction may be live, pre-recorded, or streamed to school from teachers’ homes.
  • Families will be asked to commit to remote or in-person for the duration of the hybrid period. In-person can shift to remote, but any shifts from remote to in-person will be based on space and determined by D114.
  • In-person families will be encouraged to drive their children if at all possible to reduce the number of students riding buses--safety, contact tracing,and capacity concerns.
  • Meals and materials will be available for ALL students, no matter what model is chosen/assigned.

Considerations in Decision-Making

In-Person--it won’t be “normal” school...

Full Remote

2 days in-person, 3 days remote

Maintain current routines

No more than 11-12 per room. Students remain in a cohort in a given room. Teachers rotate rooms. This includes specials/exploratories and PE (if we can’t go outside). In-person assignments will be prioritized if more want it than we can fit.

No in-person access to staff or peers.

6 ft distance at all times. Masks on inside at all times. Mask breaks scheduled with assigned locations. Self-certification processes in place and temperature checks at all entry points.

Likely will not have room for all those who request in-person.

Can only last as long as numbers indicate. May have to shift back to full remote at any point.

Continue to rely on family supervision all 5 days per week.

What Happens When...

A teacher or student presents with a new potential COVID symptom?

There is a positive COVID diagnosis?

There are multiple COVID diagnoses?

  • They are immediately sent home. All family members are also sent home.
  • The classroom(s) is/are closed and instruction moved to a new space(s).
  • The room(s) is/are sanitized 24 hours after closing. Classrooms can then be reopened.
  • The student/staff member is asked to quarantine for 14 days. The same is true for family members.
  • If an alternative diagnosis is presented, I review the doctor’s guidance and recommendations.
  • If a COVID test is taken, we wait for the results and review the outcome and recommendations.
  • The student/staff member is not permitted on site and is asked to follow their doctor’s guidance. All family members are also sent home.
  • The classroom(s) is/are closed and instruction moved to a new space(s).
  • I immediately contact the Lake County Health Department and follow their guidance. The initiate contact tracing.
  • The room(s) is/are sanitized 24 hours after closing. Classrooms can then be reopened.
  • Student/staff cannot return until cleared by a doctor to do so.

  • The student/staff member is not permitted on site and is asked to follow their doctor’s guidance.
  • The classroom(s) is/are closed and instruction moved to a new space(s).
  • I immediately contact the Lake County Health Department and follow their guidance. They initiate contact tracing.
  • The room(s) is/are sanitized 24 hours after closing. Classrooms can then be reopened if cleared to do so by the Lake County Health Department.
  • Student/staff cannot return until cleared by a doctor to do so and Lake County Health Department must also clear reopening.

So What Are We Asking You to Decide?

*Total Kindergarten enrollment is at 64, so we have added a section of Kindergarten to launch the Hybrid model.

Surveys will be sent out Tuesday, September 29 by email. There will be one survey PER STUDENT. This will give us data for each child.

Surveys must be completed by noon on Monday, October 5. Any student with no survey data entered will stay full remote.

Next Steps

  • Tomorrow--surveys sent to all families, one per student. So, if you have multiple children, you will be asked to complete a survey for each child.
  • Between now and 10/19--strong collaboration, communication, and tons of support to launch the Hybrid model.
