ACADEMIC COURSE LEVELS

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP): This level is designed to prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Examination. These courses are academically demanding and challenging. Students who plan to enroll in an honors level college program should consider taking courses at the AP level. Students receive weighted credit for courses at this level. Many colleges will grant college credit for AP courses if you take the AP Exam and receive a score of 3 or higher. Teacher/counselor recommendation is encouraged to enroll in AP courses.

HONORS (H): The Honors level courses will cover more material in greater depth and demand more work than the Academic level courses. Students must be committed to fulfilling all course requirements. Students choosing Honors level courses should have a strong academic record and a desire to attend a competitive four-year college. Students receive weighted credit for Honors level courses.

ACADEMIC: Recognizing that the American economy, now more than ever, requires some level of postsecondary education, courses at this level are designed to prepare students for college, university, nursing school, technical school and other post-secondary institutions. Courses at this level will provide students with a strong academic background for the future.

Recommendations from Core Teachers

    • Always check with your current teacher for placement in ninth grade core classes. e.g. Math placement/ honors classes

    • Students interested in engineering or a medical profession could consider doubling up on their sciences.
