Our Mission is – to foster, promote and communicate the participation and enjoyment of bridge as a mindsport in Scotland

Our Vision is - for Scotland to be widely recognized as a Centre of Excellence for Bridge

In order to work towards reaching our Vision we have identified various Goals that will be linked to our operating plan.

These Goals will determine the timing and breadth of the activities the Scottish Bridge Union provides directly to its members or, indirectly through its support of bridge clubs and tutors in Scotland.

Not all of these Goals will be achieved in the short term but they mark our aspirations for the future:

The Trustees have identified 8 Goals that roughly fall into 4 categories:

  1. Increasing the numbers of people playing bridge in Scotland;

  • Listening to and working with our wider membership to provide facilities that members want;

  • Providing and supporting the provision of good quality bridge tuition;

  • Maintaining Scotland’s presence in the international arena.

  • The Scottish Bridge Union to be taking account of the interests of the wider membership in determining and driving forward the operational plan.
    • To increase the number of people of all ages, abilities and diverse backgrounds playing bridge

  • People in Scotland to be aware of the social and health benefits of playing bridge
  • To show Scotland is adapting the provision of bridge to ensure its sustainability in the fast-changing digital world.

We want :

  • The Scottish Bridge Union to maintain a high standard of fair and honest play by all its members in accordance with the World Bridge Federation’s Regulations
  • Scotland to have a competitive presence in international competition and a recognized voice in the governance of the sport.
  • Bridge clubs and tutors in Scotland to provide high quality teaching and play facilities
  • Established pathways and opportunities to be set up for volunteers, teachers and tournament directors

We want:

  • Honesty and maintaining high ethical standards;
  • Always treating other players, TDs and teachers with dignity and respect
  • Embracing change to continuously improve
  • Be welcoming, inclusive and non-discriminatory
  • Encourage questioning; promoting a culture of transparency and active listening to Members

Next Steps:

  • Collaboration between SBU Operational Team/ Trustees/ Members /Affiliated Clubs to define an operational plan;

  • Operational plan will include activities and timings that can be measured and reported on to assess whether working towards our Goals or not

The GM Job description identifies the key roles and responsibilities of the role

of the most senior person in the Operational Team reporting directly to the Board of Trustees

The SBU GM will be

Accountable to the Board of trustees

Charged with converting organisational

objectives into an operational plan

  • Someone with the energy and interest to work
  • With the trustees and volunteers in the operational management team and beyond
  • To develop and instigate this operating plan for the charity in its formative years

  • Expected, at the same time, to contribute some time voluntarily, in keeping with the ethos of a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation
