Musical Effect
When true collaboration takes place in
an ensemble, the result will be a sound that is greater than the sum of its parts, musical ideas will be effectively expressed, and the highest
sense of artistry will be achieved. Strive to convey the emotion of the piece with your facial expressions. Knowing the meaning of the piece and the mood you are trying to convey to help
singers emotionally connect with the music.
Balance
The butterfly's wings have parts that are more prominent just as some elements should be more prominent in the performance of the music. Pay particular attention to melodic lines and inner moving harmonies as they should be heard above more stagnant parts or sustained chords. Also be sure that the accompaniment volume is supportive and not overpowering.
Interpretation
Musicians job to find meaning in the music and to teach students to perform it with that vision intact. Work to shape each phrase using
melodic lines, composer markings and the text as your guides. Having singers use their bodies to show phrasing, dynamics, and important stylistic elements will help them achieve success in this area. Listening to stylistically similar pieces by reputable choirs can be very helpful.
Diction
Tall, pure vowels and a lifted soft palate are essential to creating a
beautiful, unified sound. It is critical that students keep a relaxed
jaw, yet engage other facial muscles appropriately. Be sure that [i]
sounds are sung with relaxed lips, that darker vowels don’t become muddy, and that brighter vowels are sung with adequate space.

Tone Quality
Like the rush of a waterfall, singers must simultaneously use a great deal of energy to create good tone quality; yet the resulting sound should be free of tension, pure, and blended like the pool pictured above.
Rating system:
I–Superior;II–Excellent; III–Good/Average; IV–Fair; V–Needs Improvement.
Intonation
When thinking about intonation… think of drawing a bull's eye to
show the deviation from the center of the pitch. Encourage
active listening by utilizing recording devices for playback of the students' performances.
Technique
It is critical that pitches, rhythms, and articulations are accurate for the integrity of the piece. Proper posture with an expanded rib cage and low breath will enable your singers to attack and release skillfully.
So… How are you doing with all of this?
