2025 1st & 2nd Grade Numbers

  • Players: 208 total
    • First Grade: 75 boys, 14 girls
    • Second Grade: 65 boys, 44 girls

  • Volunteer Coaches:
    • 35 signed up (can always use more)
    • Only about half of those have completed registration
    • A few teams still in need of volunteers

Team Formation

  • Created by Schools/Mutual Requests/Coaches available
  • First Grade: 5 or 6 players per team ideally
    • Typically 3 on 3
  • Second Grade: 7 or 8 players ideally
    • Typically 4 on 4
  • However, we have a Coach shortage…
  • Limited options:
    • Limit team count (larger teams, less playing time, break-up schools/mutual requests)

Season Schedule

  • Monday, Oct 20th - Saturday, Dec 6th
    • 7 weeks of practices
      • Each practice 1 hour in length at District 196 schools
      • Week of Thanksgiving will be minimal
      • Locations: East Lake, Emerald Trail, Shannon Park, Red Pine, RES, Diamond Path, & Dakota Ridge
    • 5 Saturday Games:
      • 11/1, 11/8, 11/15, 11/22, 12/6
      • 12/6 2nd grade games = Full Court! (still 4 on 4)
      • Locations: Shannon Park and East Lake

1st Grade Format

  • Basket height 8 feet with a 27.5 inch basketball.
  • Practices 1 hour and games of 2-20 minute halves.
  • 3 on 3 games
  • Working on shooting technique, passing, moving with and without the basketball.
  • Player-to-player defense fundamentals will be taught.
  • Work on triple threat position and squaring up to the basket.
  • Every player will have a basketball in practice.
  • Lots of teaching and repetition.
  • No Referees (Coaches on court, scrimmage-style)

2nd Grade Format

  • Basket height 9 feet with a 27.5 inch basketball.
  • Practices 1 hour and games of 2-20 minute halves.
  • 4 on 4 games
  • Teach and review offensive and defensive skills.
  • No defense until top of the key.
  • Emphasize team aspect of the game: passing, cutting and spacing.
  • Make sure every player gets a chance to bring the ball up the court.
  • Expanded emphasis on double dribble, travel, and reaching.
  • No Referees (Coaches on court, scrimmage-style)

Court Configuration

  • Side courts at Shannon Park & East Lake
  • Lines are not perfect for these courts - do your best to be consistent.
  • Safety is important. Stop and restart if necessary (ex. too near the walls).
  • Hoop cranks are at each site (ask site monitor)

Rules and Reffing

  • No refs
  • Coaches are on the court - with a development focus
  • Fall back on defense
  • Can steal on pass, not dribble (within reason)
  • No blocked shots
  • Fouls/Infractions: re-start at the top
  • No score kept
  • More strict by end of season in 2nd grade

Be a good teammate

  • Encourage and cheer for all
  • Do what is best for your team
  • Be a leader on and off the court

Experience in sports is like a hard teacher. It gives you a test first,

so you can understand the lesson afterwards.

    • Have a plan and include plenty of FUN!
    • Describe it! Demonstrate it! Do it!
    • Get to know the players
  • Have FUN and know where the players are at by season’s end
