We are thrilled to announce the launch of a Spanish/English dual language program at Pioneer Elementary starting in September 2025.

This program will be entirely optional.

Dual Language programs are known to foster high academic achievement and offer a strong foundation for students to become bilingual and biliterate.

Interested families will complete an application.

It is only open to all students who live in the Pioneer school area and will be starting kindergarten in September 2025.

It is planned for students who enter the program in kindergarten to remain in the program through 5th grade.

Estamos felices de anunciar el lanzamiento de un programa de doble idioma Español/Inglés en la primaria Pioneer, comenzando desde Septiembre 2025.

Este programa será completamente opcional.

Los programas de Doble Idioma fomentan altos logros académicos y ofrecen bases fuertes para que los estudiantes se conviertan en bilingües y biletrados.

Las familias interesadas deben completar un formulario de aplicación.

Este programa está abierto para todos los estudiantes que vivan en el área de asistencia de Pioneer y que vayan a comenzar kínder en Septiembre 2025.

What is Dual Language?

Dual Language is program in which…

• the classroom teacher uses Spanish for instruction a significant portion of the day and English part of the day.
• A foundation of literacy in Spanish is built first with English literacy coming later.
• About half of the students in the class will have a home language of Spanish and about half will have a home language of English or even another language.
• Over time (3-5 years) students become bilingual and biliterate, and gain academic skills in both languages.

Doble Idioma es un programa en el cual…

• El maestro de clases usa español para la instrucción de gran parte del día, e inglés el resto del día.
• Se crea primero una base fuerte de alfabetismo en español, y luego en inglés.
• la mitad de los estudiantes en la clase tendrán español como su idioma nativo, y la otra mitad tendrá inglés
• A lo largo del programa (3-5 años), los estudiantes se volverán bilingües y biletrados, y ganarán habilidades académicas en ambos idiomas.

¿Por qué es efectivo este programa?

Why is this program effective?

• For Spanish-speakers, it allows them to become highly literate in their home language. Research shows that students with high levels of literacy in their home language tend to have high levels of success in US schools.
• For both English speakers and Spanish speakers, it allows them to have 2 paths to literacy instead of just one. This leads to higher levels of success.
• Students become bilingual, biliterate, gain high levels of academic skills, and gain skills in interacting with people from different cultural backgrounds.

• Para hispanohablantes, les permite volverse altamente letrados en su idioma nativo. Investigaciones muestran que estudiantes con altos niveles de alfabetismo en su idioma nativo tienden a tener altos niveles de éxito en escuelas de EEUU.
• Para angloparlantes e hispanohablantes, les permite tener dos caminos hacia alfabetismo, en vez de solo uno. Esto conlleva a altos niveles de éxito.
• Los estudiantes se vuelven bilingües, biletrados, y ganan altos niveles de habilidades académicas, y ganan habilidades para interactuar con personas de diferentes trasfondos culturales

¿Cómo se usan los dos idiomas?

How are the two languages used?

En kínder, el maestro usa español 90% del tiempo para la instrucción.

A medida que los estudiantes avanzan en su grado, el porcentaje de instrucción de español es reducido hasta llegar a 50/50.

Especialistas de aprendizaje (ed. física, música, biblioteca, SEL, ciencia) usarán inglés para su instrucción.

In kindergarten, the teacher uses Spanish 90% of the time for instruction.

As students advance in grade level, the percentage of instruction in Spanish is reduced until it hits 50/50.

Learning specialists (PE, Music, Library, SEL, Science) teachers use English for instruction.

¿Cómo es el proceso de aplicación?

What is the application process?

Families who are interested in this program will fill out an application form.

Families who fill out the form may be contacted to answer follow up questions and get answers to any questions they may have.

The applications will be reviewed with the goal of creating classes with a balance of students from both language backgrounds (Spanish and English).

Selections will be completed by May 30th

Families of students enrolling in the program will plan for their child to remain the program through 5th grade.

An orientation for the families of selected students will take place on June 5th.

Las familias interesadas en este programa deben completar un formato de aplicación.

Las familias que completen el formato pueden ser contactadas para responder preguntas de seguimiento y para recibir respuestas a preguntas que puedan tener.

Las aplicaciones serán revisadas con la meta de crear clases con un balance de estudiantes de ambos trasfondos de idiomas (español el inglés).

La selección será completada para mayo 30 y se contactará a las familias.

Las familias de estudiantes que se inscriban en el programa van a planear para que su hijo permanezca en el programa hasta el grado 5to.

Se hará una orientación para las familias de estudiantes seleccionados en junio 5.
