AI Use and Monitoring @ Doha College

We have conducted extensive research on the impact of AI in education, examining both its potential benefits and drawbacks. In this document, we will illustrate how our approach transcends traditional AI detection software, highlighting its inaccuracies and limitations. Our commitment to promoting academic integrity and critical thinking is evident in various initiatives designed to cultivate a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities presented by an AI-driven world.

AI Monitoring Tools Used at DC

We pay for a subscription to BriskAI which is a Google Chrome Extension. It allows us to monitor student work and their likelihood of AI use in two ways:

  • With a “Likely” visual bar
  • With the “Inspect Writing” feature which tracks edits and number of pastes and gives video access of the edits

Professional Judgement

The best AI detection is teacher professional judgement

  • Our teachers regularly mark student work and they know the ability and style of their students
  • Teachers challenge students through positive dialogue and questioning
  • Where further investigation is needed they can draw from multiple tools as well as request and ChatGPT chat histories
  • Once the investigation has been conducted - appropriate action can be taken if needed

  • AI detectors have limitations because AI-generated text mimics human writing. These detectors analyse patterns and deviations from natural language, but as AI algorithms like GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) improve, distinguishing between human and AI text becomes increasingly challenging.
  • AI detectors do not suot many international students as they are more biased towards non native English speakers - see article here

Why AI Detectors Are Problematic
