Reflexivity

3 of 28

Session Description

This session is designed to introduce the concept of reflexivity in youth participatory action research (YPAR) and the importance of acknowledging and addressing positionality and biases in the research process. Through engaging in reflective exercises and group discussions, collaborators will develop a deeper understanding of how reflexivity can contribute to the research findings in YPAR.

How does this lesson relate to my learning in the class?

  1. YPAR Learning Standard:
  2. Understand the concept of reflexivity in YPAR.
  3. Practice reflection on positionality and biases in the research process.

Introduction: Qualitative Coding Techniques

  • Reflexivity in research involves critically examining the researcher's positionality and biases in the research process. It requires researchers to be aware of how their own experiences, values, and assumptions shape their research questions, methodology, and interpretation of findings. Reflexivity is particularly important in youth participatory action research (YPAR) as it helps to ensure that the research process is equitable and respectful of all participants.

  • Reflexivity can be achieved through various methods, including journaling, regular reflection with co-researchers, and critical self-examination of one's beliefs and values. By practicing reflexivity, YPAR researchers can work towards creating a more just and equitable research process that empowers youth to be agents of change in their communities.

Activity: What is Reflexivity? (Discussion)

Discussion questions:

  1. What is reflexivity?
  2. What is your role in the research process? How do your identities influence how you show up and how you connect to the research?

Activity: What is Reflexivity? (Discussion)

Example: A group of high school students is conducting a YPAR project on the quality of food served in the school cafeteria. The students are working with a teacher as a facilitator, and they have also invited a nutritionist to provide feedback and guidance on their project.

To be reflexive in this project, the students could start by reflecting on their own experiences and biases related to food and nutrition. They could ask themselves questions such as:

  • What are my personal preferences and biases when it comes to food?
  • How do my cultural, social, and economic backgrounds influence my views on food?
  • Have I ever experienced food insecurity or had limited access to healthy food options?
  • How might my experiences and biases impact the research questions I ask, the data I collect, and the conclusions I draw?

The students could also reflect on the role of their facilitator and the nutritionist in the project. They could ask questions such as:

  • What are the facilitator's and the nutritionist's perspectives on food and nutrition?
  • How might their perspectives influence the research process and the conclusions drawn from the data?
  • How can we ensure that all perspectives are represented and respected in the project?

By reflecting on these questions and regularly checking in with each other and the nutritionist, the students can ensure that their YPAR project is respectful, equitable, and inclusive of all perspectives. This practice of reflexivity can also help them to identify and address potential biases and assumptions throughout the research process.

SlidesCarnival icons are editable shapes.

This means that you can:

  • Resize them without losing quality.
  • Change fill color and opacity.
  • Change line color, width and style.

Isn’t that nice? :)

Now you can use any emoji as an icon!

And of course it resizes without losing quality and you can change the color.
