What is active learning?

"Active learning engages students in the process of learning through activities and/or discussion in class, as opposed to passively listening to an expert. It emphasizes higher-order thinking and often involves group work."

  • from Scott Freeman et al in their meta study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

What is Pear Deck?

  • A great way to engage students using Slide Decks.
  • Many other add-ons like Flashcard Factory and has partnerships with lots of things we already use (NewsELA, Be Internet Awesome, etc.)

Why is this important?

  • When students are taking part in their own learning, they are more likely to actually LEARN!
  • This is also fun!
  • This isn’t just some other new thing, we can use this to add on to all our other Google Slide Decks as an extra resource to give us a power up or boost!

Can I use this for Distance Learning?

  • YES!
  • Students can join in at a certain time to be synchronous with you OR they can join and go at their own pace using student-paced mode to be asynchronous.
  • PearDeck also has partners that have created prompts, lessons, etc. that are ready to go!
