Instructions for students:

  1. Read the story or if you prefer, listen to the story while you read it.

  1. When you finish, complete the quiz independently. Be sure to go back to the story for text evidence before you click on an answer.

  1. If you do not score a 9-10, reread the story before taking the quiz again. We are sent a report indicating your activity and should not see 2 quizzes in a row. Again, reread the text as many times as needed. The goal is to score well on the quiz, not to finish quickly.

  1. If you feel that the level needs to be changed, speak with your teacher.

Questions Parents Ask about Reading A-Z

  1. Why is my child at this level? Children are assigned a level in RAZ based on classroom assessments. RAZ should be an activity that students can do independently, without struggling. If this is not the case, ask your child to speak with me. In order to advance a level, students need to demonstrate proficiency. Reading all the books in a level does not equate with changing levels; rereading is a powerful strategy to improve comprehension.
  2. Can my child only read the books in his or her level? Students are asked to read books at the assigned level. With that said, reading is like bike riding. If there is a topic that sounds interesting, it's ok to read a book at a lower or higher level. Lower level reading is like riding down hill and higher level reading is like riding up hill. Both types of reading or bike riding are fine, but it is also necessary to read on level (or ride on a level road) to practice and get stronger.

3. What score should my child receive on the quiz? Students should read the book and answer the questions. If they do not get a 9 or 10 score, the book should be reread while listening to the audio and the quiz retaken.

4. How can I support my child? This program is designed for third graders to work independently. At the same time, please remind children that they are learning to read for information, a lifelong skill. RAZ is not reading a chapter book for pleasure. Remind them to read with purpose, asking themselves questions while reading. If they finish the text but are not confident of understanding the main idea, details, author´s purpose, etc. they should reread the text with the audio.

When answering the questions, students are to work independently and should go back to the text for text evidence. In class, students are asked to note the page number where they find their answer.
