  • The number 5 represents the radicand.

  • The root is always calculated for the radicand.

  • Different roots of numbers exist.

  • The number 2 represents the index of the square root; but it is common to see just the radical sign representing the square root of a number.

A perfect square is a number that can be expressed as the product of two equal numbers or factors.

The following are perfect squares:

1, 4, 9, 16, 25

Because they can be represented by

1 x 1, 2 x 2, 3 x 3, 4 x 4, and 5 x 5

respectively.

Perfect square roots have...

  • Two equal factors
  • A positive and a negative square root
  • When the answer is written without a sign in front of it it is considered the positive square root.
  • When the answer is written with the negative sign in front of it, it is considered the negative square root.
