    1. Chapter 2 of WASC Self-Study Report

The Importance of SLOs

Why should we care about Schoolwide Learner Outcomes?

  • The development of our SLOs enables us to clarify and measure what all students should know, understand, and be able to do when they graduate from El Rancho High School.

Who should create the SLOs?

  • It is important that all ERHS stakeholders be a part of the process of the discussion of, revision of, and defining of the relationship between the SLOs, the SPSA, and our identified student learner needs.

How will the revision/development of our SLOs be a continuous process?

  • This is step 1 in the revision process, we will review school-wide data and the 2021-2022 SPSA before we finalize our revised SLOs. As we identify our major student learner needs, our SLOs will solidify the clear direction we will take ERHS in the next several years.

El Rancho High School

Based on the notes/feedback taken during the November meeting, all FOL groups agreed that they preferred the DONS SLO acronym, so we will move forward with DONS

Comments, Questions, Observations from November 15th

  • I like D O N S. It is short and easy to remember.
  • The shorter the better.
  • “Computer skills” should be stated differently. - Be broader, because technology is no longer just computer skills.
  • Does it have to state “Common Core?”
  • “Optimize planning” is unclear.
  • Main letter (DONS) should coincide with main word/point.
  • Will these have to be measurable? How would we measure them?
  • If we use IDEA, we should incorporate them more somewhere (not just a poster)
  • I like the 2016 IDEA shortened version. I believe we can develop a plan to implement this into our daily instruction (hold both students and teachers responsible for which SLO is being addressed)
  • (21st century skills are more than just use of technology-agreed; clarify
  • Students won’t remember them if they are too long
  • I like DONS better than IDEA.
  • I like the DONS acronym better, but I think each “letter idea” should be much shorter, for example “Nurture Individuality”

FOL Curriculum

SLOs: DONS (example)

Comments, Questions, Observations from November 15th

  • Like DONS better
  • Ties with “We are Dons. Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn!”
  • Change “families” instead of parents
  • Instead of “computer skills”, change to “technology”
  • IDEA seems to be redundant
    • Missing parental involvement
    • It’s difficult to remember- who can actually describe each letter?
  • We need something catchy
  • LCAP and DONS needs to be linked

FOL Learning & Teaching

SLOs: DONS (example)

Comments, Questions, Observations from November 15th

  • Teachers won’t use if no accountability, need to incorporate it
  • Integrate what already have for mission statement
  • DONS easier for even teachers, step in right direction but still hard to incorporate acronym
  • Reinforce on the PA helpful to teachers too
  • One for teachers and one for students
  • Delete the COMMON CORE wording
  • D could be Develop
  • O could be the word ORGANIZE, OBTAIN
  • Needs to be short so easy for students like respectful, responsible, ready to learn
  • UDL needs to be incorporated into
  • Not all students in all of classes can read either
