  • The most important city of all ancient Roman cities in the territory of today’s Serbia;
  • The population of Sirmium was around 100 000 (it would be roughly 8 million people today!)

Traianus Decius(249-251.)

  • Traian Decius was the first Roman emperor to have Illyrian origins
  • He was born in the village of Budalija, near Sirmium
  • He was awarded the honourable name Traianus
  • He persecuted Christians because Christians refused to offer sacrifices to the pagans’ gods
  • He was murdered while fighting Goths in Moesia Inferior

Aurelian (270-275.)

  • „Hand on hilt“ (manu ad ferrum)
  • He defended the empire from outside attacks
  • He was a skillful general
  • He destroyed the Gaul and Palmyrene empires
  • He introduced economic reforms
  • He was assassinated in a conspiracy in 275 a.d.

Probus (276-282.)

  • He continued Aurelian’s policy
  • He severely punished Aurelian’s assassins
  • He was also a skillful general
  • He established order and discipline in the army
  • He made Germans fight for Roman empire
  • His soldiers staged a rebellion and assassinated him in 282.

Maximian

Maximian (285-305.)

  • He was the first Dominate’s emperor born in Sirmium
  • He ruled the country with his friend Diocletian
  • He fought Germans along the river Rhine
  • He was harsh and cold-hearted, but a competent leader
  • He abdicated against his will in 305 a.d.
  • He died fighting against Constantine the Great wanting his son to succeed as an emperor

Constantius II

Constantius II (337-361.)

  • His father was Constantine the Great
  • In 337, the empire was split among 3 brothers
  • In 351, he defeated Magnentius in the battle of Mursa (today’s Osijek). Constantius further persecuted Magnentius until the latter one commited suicide in 353.
  • He banned pagan customs
  • His policy was predominantly defensive
  • He died of illness in 361.

Gratian

Gratian (375-383.)

  • He was just 8 years old when he earned the title of Augustus
  • He became an emperor when was 16
  • He fought against Germans
  • He eradicated Arian teachings
  • 379. He chose Theodosius I to be his co-ruler, i.e. diarch.
  • 383. His army betrayed and killed him while he was fighting against Magnus Maximus for the Gaul territory
