What is the FIRST Tech Challenge Dean’s List Award?

In an effort to recognize the leadership and dedication of the most outstanding secondary school students from FIRST®, the Kamen family sponsors awards for selected 10th or 11th grade Students the FIRST Tech Challenge FIRST Dean’s List Award.

What is the FIRST Tech Challenge Dean’s List Award?

The students who earn FIRST Dean’s List status as a Semi-finalist, Finalist or Winner, are great examples of current Student leaders who have led their Teams and communities to increased awareness for FIRST and its mission.

It is the goal of FIRST that these individuals will continue, post-award, as great leaders, student alumni, and advocates of FIRST.

Student Eligibility

Students must be in grade 10 or grade 11 to be eligible.

Each team can submit 2 students as FIRST Dean’s List Award

semi-finalists.

Criteria for selection:�

  • Demonstrated leadership and commitment to the FIRST Core Values.

  • Effectiveness at increasing awareness of FIRST in their school and community.

  • Demonstrates passion for a long-term commitment to FIRST.

  • Individual contributions to their team and how they contribute to the overall success of the team.

  • Proven experience in areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

  • Their ability as a role model and how they can motivate and lead fellow team members.

Why Should I Nominate Students?

  • A Dean’s List nomination is a fantastic way to recognize your students efforts.�
  • Showcases what you want to see in all students on your team.�
  • Finalists get an invite to go to the World Championship and meet with Dean Kamen.�
  • Winners at the World Championship will win a grant for their team for the following year.

Who can write the Dean’s list award nomination

  • Coaches or mentors (not related to the student).�
  • The coach or mentor nominating the student(s) must answer several questions as part of the submission.

  • You can “promote” a mentor to Dean’s List Award Submitter.

What should students expect?

  • Online interview (Google meet).�
  • There will be 2 interviewers.�
  • There also MUST be a parent or coach present for the interview. The coach or parent present does not participate in the interview.

  • The interview is the time for the student to "sell themselves".

What should students expect?

  • Be ready to have follow-up questions during their league tournament.�
  • Show leadership at the event as volunteers will share this information with the Dean's List adjudicators.
