Shape Patterns

Making predictions about what came before or what could come next is an important skill. Using evidence to make predictions is important in math and science.

  • Number of Shapes
  • Color of Shapes
  • Size of Shapes
  • Orientation of Shapes

We will look into these on the next slides. Are you ready to write some examples in your notebook?

Number of Shapes

  • Here we see the shape is getting smaller, decreasing by two boxes each time.
  • In the next stage there would be two green boxes stacked on top of each other.
  • Here we the outlined figure is growing, adding one dot to the left and one dot to right each time.
  • In the next stage there would be 12 total dots, 5 on the left & right, 1 on top & bottom

See if you can make a prediction of how many total shapes will be in the next series of each pattern below

Color of Shapes

  • In this pattern, we see two shapes, each a different color.
  • The pattern begins with the red rectangle, then uses a green triangle.
  • The pattern alternates between the different colored shapes and increases the amount of each shape by 1 each time.
  • The next stage would have 3 green triangles

See if you can make predictions of what color and how many of the shapes will appear next in the pattern.

6 of 12

Size of Shapes

  • Here, we see that as the white square in the center grows in size, the number of blue squares on the outside increases as well.
  • In the next stage, the white square would be surrounded by 40 total squares.

As the shapes change in size, see if you can make predictions of how many of total shapes will appear next in the pattern.

Orientation of Shapes

  • Here, we see two shapes alternating, adding 1 and rotating each time!
  • Which picture below represents the next stage of the pattern?

See if you can make predictions of what shape, color and how it will be turned in the next pattern.

The correct answer is……….

A; a column with 5 boxes is stacked on the right each time: 5 total for stage 1, 10 total for stage 2, 15 total for stage 3 and 20 total for stage 4

B; 3 boxes are added to the end of the previous stage to create a new stage: 1 total for stage 1, 4 total for stage 2, 7 total for stage 3, 10 total for stage 4, 13 total for stage 5

B; one shape is added, alternating between squares first and then circles
