Photograph Your World

2 of 21

Today we will learn about clouds and how they can help a ship’s crew predict weather!

Before we start, let’s reflect on these questions:

  • What types of photographs did sailors on Intrepid take?
  • What are some different ways to take a photograph?
  • How can we document our world through photography?

All of these photos can show us what life was like for these sailors. Photography is a great way to document a moment in time.

What do you notice in each photo?

What are some different ways to take a photograph?

There are many different ways to take a photograph. One way is to change the viewpoint. Three different points of view are:

  • bird’s eye view
  • worm’s eye view
  • eye level

Bird’s Eye View

This type of photograph is taken far above something looking down as if you were a bird flying overhead looking down at the ground.

Photographs like this show the vastness of space and can make the viewer feel like they have power over what they are viewing.

Worm’s Eye View

This type of photograph is taken below something looking up as if you were a worm on the ground looking up above.

Photographs like this can make the viewer feel small and in awe of everything that seems to be above them in the photograph.

Eye Level

This type of photograph is taken at eye level showing your normal line of vision.

Photographs like this can make the viewer feel like they are looking through the eyes of a person living at the time the photograph was taken. This style is a great way to put you in the shoes of the person taking the photo.

How can we document our world through photography?

Every photo tells a story about when and where it was taken. It can also give someone the perspective of the person taking the photo.

If someone looked at one of your photos a hundred years from now, what would you want them to know about your life?

As you look at each image discuss:

  • Why do you think this photo was taken?
  • What does this photo tell you about life on the ship?

Discuss how these different photos feel.

Create a Photo Diary:

For the next week take three photos a day of your life.

Create a Photo Diary:

At the end of the week you and your family will have a collection of photos.

Work together to discuss which photos best tell the story of your family’s life.

Create a photo book by either printing your photos out or creating a digital photo book in a program like Powerpoint or an album on your phone.
