Michigan Medicine Tech Writing
My project focused on improving how Michigan Medicine communicates policies and educates staff on safe practices. I worked with the Information Assurance team to help manage monthly phishing simulations and rewrote key internal policies to make them easier to understand and follow. The main takeaway was that clear, accessible communication is just as important as technical solutions when it comes to keeping people and systems safe
Problem
Many policies at Michigan Medicine were outdated, unclear, or difficult for staff to follow. In addition, two new health systems—West and Sparrow—were recently incorporated under Michigan Medicine’s umbrella and needed updated, unified policies to meet internal standards and ensure consistent practices.
Methods
Results
To solve the problem, I collaborated with the team to review, revise, and draft over 6 new internal policies, including Acceptable Use and Vulnerability Management policies for both West, Sparrow, and Michigan Medicine. I ensured the language was clear and aligned with Michigan Medicine standards. I also supported monthly phishing simulations sent to over 35,000 staff, helping track engagement and increase awareness. Feedback from stakeholders led to quicker policy approval and smoother onboarding of the new health systems.
For confidentiality and security reasons, I am unable to share the full contents of our policies, as they are classified as internal organizational documents. The information presented here provides a high-level overview intended for external audiences.
