Permissions - Recap

  • Due to different institutional deposit workflows, we are planning an update to the SP DV Guide:
    • Under “Your Research Data” > “Add Data” & “Your Dataverses” > “Create Dataverse”
    • New statement under both sections to clarify how to deposit:

“Please note that each participating institution using the Scholars Portal Dataverse may choose to setup the service differently for its users. If you don’t see the ‘Add Data’ button appear after login, follow any instructions provided on your institution’s Dataverse landing page OR ‘Contact’ the administrator for your institution’s Dataverse to inquire about depositing. “

In Development: Sign-up & Login Changes

  • New users / Sign up
    • Only allow sign up for authorized email domains
    • Sign up form to auto-detect affiliation based on email domain
    • If user is affiliated with participating Shibboleth school, sends user to Shibboleth login page
    • Sends e-mail confirmation to user after sign -up
    • After user validates email, user is assigned to new permissions group (Shibboleth users assigned to Shibboleth permissions group)
    • Non-affiliated users can sign up but will not be added to an affiliation group (*new)
  • Current users / Login
    • Same as current; default login page with option to switch to institutional login (Shibboleth) if school supported

Affiliations - based permissions

  • DV admins will add the institutional permissions group to their dataverses as appropriate
  • Workflow:
    1. User signs up for an account using their institutional email address
    2. A validation email is sent to the user
    3. User validates their email address
    4. User is added to the institutional permissions group
    5. User receives an email about being added to the permissions group
  • Existing users will be added to previously-identified affiliation groups

Shibboleth Pilot

  • Testing will continue with an additional 2-3 schools over the summer
  • If successful, we will release the DV-localized Shibboleth login for those supported schools in the Fall 2019
  • Users currently using general login will be offered option to migrate to Shibboleth login at the discretion of each participating Shibboleth school

Goal is to facilitate cross- repository conversations about policy, technical interoperability, and develop a framework for “national” repository services.
