Coordinate w/ class docents

  • Someone take the lead to schedule lessons with the teacher and cc everybody
  • Divide the lessons or work together (the more hands the merrier) or a combo of both
  • Can be done solo - teacher will help
  • If you need help for the more involved projects (weaving, sculpture, printmaking), let me know

Day of Volunteering

  • Sign in on-campus
  • Grab the key for Rm 18 from the Art Docent cubby (sign-in/out)
  • Review Art Docent MASTER BINDER in Rm 18 (print lesson or use the copy in the binder)
  • Copies of worksheets, templates printed on cardstock, or drawing aids are in an open file folder on the back wall
  • Collect supplies and lesson materials from Rm 18 to transport
  • NEW - Art Docent is in classroom
    • Recruit students to help with set-up
    • Teacher pulls up your lesson slideshow & cast to their Apple TV

  • Show art gallery slideshow and discuss
  • Complete the project (step-by-step)
  • Have students help clean up
  • Give teachers the art when done
  • Return supplies to Rm 18
  • Return any originals to the MASTER BINDER

  • Sign out in the school office

3 Lesson sections

  • Docent Preparation - review before seeing students
    • Objective: simple description of what students will learn and do
    • Art Standards & Focus: points of specific section in CA Standard
    • Art Elements & Vocab: line, color, texture, 2D shape, etc
    • Preparation: list of supplies
  • Art Gallery Information - artist info & history to share
  • Step-by-Step Lesson Plan
    • Discussion - talking points and prompting questions
    • Project - numbered step-by-step tasks
    • Sharing - if time permits, what went well, use vocab

Tips - slideshow & discussion

  • Feel free to curate your talking points
  • 5-10 minutes max on the art gallery info
  • 5-10 minutes on discussion of the slideshow images
    • Ask the students questions - wait for quiet hands
    • Give praise when they are doing a good job listening
  • All grades: spend more time on the project and less time lecturing

Tips - project

  • 1st Step: Put name on project
  • Complete the project in steps - demo!
  • Have students work with mistakes
  • Don’t put out the paint until it's time to paint!
  • If you make a sample, save it in the TK-5 grade samples file folder
  • If students rush and finish early, give them crayons and paper or see what the teachers would like (they may offer books, etc.)
  • If time permits, shoot a few photographs for our social media and yearbook!

Tips - general

  • Return supplies to Rm 18
    • if you have extra worksheets, especially templates on cardstock (they are hard to make on the Rizzo), file them in the file folders in Rm 18 (it is so helpful to save and reuse)

Tips - general (continued)

  • Be conservative with tempera paint - use palettes or plates
    • Clean up paint palettes in the class
  • Students share colored pencils, crayons, oil pastels at tables - we have extra small containers for this
  • Use good pink pearl erasers (not the pencil erasers)
  • You may need to sharpen pencils! We have 2 sharpeners in rm 18.
  • Throw away dead markers - we have backup in cabinets for replenishing
